That is some serious Brandon Workman type stuff.

Nah, Workman was bad in Boston before we hot him. More like Turk Wendell and David Phelps who were good before we got them only to have them implode upon arrival. He's been more along the lines of most of the deadline relievers we get. Few end up being good for us this century (basically just Francisco Rodriguez and Scott Eyre). The question with Kennedy is whether he's hurt or the league caught on to his smoke and mirrors.

Well, Workman had a 1.88 ERA in 2019 and was still the Red Sox closer when we got him. He wasn't looking great when we got him (though his FIP was fine) but that was only 6 2/3 innings of work.

Same for Phelps really in terms of him looking good when he got him, too small a sample to mean anything, but sure, perhaps a better comparison.

I certainly didn't expect Kennedy to be that great, and if he got to pitch 32 innings for us he might well match his Texas stats, just as Hector and Bradley have wound up being good over time this year. But we no longer have time.

Nothing special about deadline relievers I suspect, just: relievers.
