Of course Hector might have gotten into trouble in the 8th and either been forced to face a third batter or given way to Bradley who would have just let the inherited runners score.

Too bad. Need more offense too obviously. Hopefully either the bats get right or Wheeler has a gem in him tomorrow.

A close game that came down to a reliever losing the game before in a flash in the eight inning. Bradley has been decent but tonight, he was the difference maker.

Tough to lose this one but you cannot make mistakes with the Rays.

I thought taking Neris out was a mistake when I saw Bradley taking the mound. I didn't necessarily foresee Bradley having a bad outing, but Neris has been very solid lately. Clipping your most reliable current reliever at one batter when locked in a 1-1 tie in the 8th didn't seem like the wisest maneuver, especially when your offense has been anemic.

The good news is Suarez is stretched out and still looks to be for real. Now if Falter can transition to a starter role (I don't think he really has RP stuff other than long relief) we'd have good depth going into next season. And can buy a year or two for the young arms to develop.

I really disliked the idea of moving Suarez to the rotation because, first, I doubted that he would be successful there and, second, I feared it would weaken what has been our team's already weakest link in recent seasons, the bullpen. Looks like I was wrong as Suarez has shone brightly in the rotation and the bullpen recently has seemingly found its footing for the first time in several seasons.

I guess they kind of knew what they were doing there, in that they decided Neris and Bradley were for real (Bradley having been slow to come around and Neris having to come back from his last down period) and Kennedy would complete the troika. It's impressive they've been able to do it without Alvarado. Reallly Neris has replaced Suarez (but more in his pre-closer role). If Coonrod is any good it really does become a strength. Not sure you even need Matt Moore with Falter also back. Seems safe to say Vince is going to have to keep minding that blister until 9/1 (or longer).

Not super worried about re-building the bullpen, we got Neris this year at a pay cut (having declined his option) and Bradley because he was non-tendered. Would consider bringing back any one or two of them (Kennedy by far the oldest) or just looking elsewhere. And they'll probably spend money and more than one year on one guy, though the labor dispute might mean they don't have to.

As they say, relievers--if picked right--are fungible. Relievers can be like placekickers in football--fickle, one year they have it, the next year they don't. That's why it's best to sign them to just one-year contracts unless they are truly elite closers or setup guys. Having to build a bullpen every year is not unusual. For that reason, it's critical to have confidence in the guy building the bullpen, see Dombrowski vs. Klentak.

I think Falter could really use some extended time in AAA to work on developing his secondary pitches. Falter's fastball is a pretty good pitch with the extension he gets plus some deception, but his slider/cutter really doesn't seem to be an MLB-quality pitch at this point, and he hasn't been throwing the curveball or changeup at all in the big leagues this year. Developing a decent changeup would be really valuable for him.

It looks like Seranthony is healthy. He’s going to be the lead guy in the BP next season. There’s no need to pencil in Suarez for that group.

Premature to say that about Seranthony - let alone assume he's going to be one of the best pitchers - but here's hoping. Suarez is almost certainly staying in the rotation regardless.

That said, neither Suarez nor Falter seem like sure things, partly for the reasons mentioned above. They have more limited repertoires and likely less success the third time through the order. But, 5th starters.

Suarez does need to work on his slider much more. He has been mostly a fastball (2 and 4 seam) and changeup guy as a starter. He used the slider much more percentage-wise in the past.

This has generally been working in limited exposure, but hitters will learn and start to sit on his fastball more (which can be hittable). I think this is part of the reason Suarez is doing less well the 2nd and 3rd time through the order. He simplified his stuff as a reliever and it is really tough to diversify that mix in the middle of the season. His long term success as a starter probably depends upon him doing that.

As of now I am not sure Seranthony will be of much help this year. His velocity in the 95-96 range is good but not great. At that velocity he had problems in the majors and it is not as if he is producing clean innings in the minors now. It would be unfair to him to rush him to the majors if he is only 75% ready,

Flyers wasn't even talking about this year. He said "lead guy in the BP next season." Which, yes, is even harder to project if he doesn't even throw a pitch this season, or is not all that effective (in what will also likely be low-leverage work).

Obviously they will tender him, having stuck with him for the past two years.

Do guys come back from TJ great guns, or does it often take a year of recovery/adjustment? Adam Morgan is finally pitching well for the Cubs, incidentally.

It varies. The most common pattern is the velocity comes first, command second. Seranthony does not have all of his previous velocity back. And he is giving up runs in most outings along with the strikeouts, so I would hazard a guess that his command is not back either. I just wish his surgery could have been done before the pandemic shutdown last year. That extra 3 months would at least have been enough to hopefully answer the velocity questions.

When I hear Tommy John surgery I always think of the #8 pick from British Columbia or Washington who never recovered. I was following his career and it so sucked because I was sure he would be good. Sera thorny was overused by Kepler because he was so pitching so well. I had a feeling we were going to feel the repercussions of that.
