Hoffman saves us from having to get actually nervous.

Or they could just keep him because he's been good and merely had a bad game with the luxury of an eight-run lead that did not get close to being blown. The epitome of a mop-up guy's job, to pitch in meaningless situations and save other arms. It's just that he was being used in tighter situations recently (and deservedly).

They kept him over Vasquez, they kept him over optioning Marte (who probably has better stuff but can't pitch consistently), they kept him over Ortiz. It's not just because he can't be optioned, they like him.

The hardest hit ball was the double play. Covey didn't get hit around. That can happen to any pitcher. He made his own trouble with the 2 walks and a HBP. It is true that he has not been terrible in most of his outings.

Win goes to Nola and it was well earned. He gave the team a solid start. Nola is a workhorse in the rotation and his 7 innings sure help the bullpen.

The offense built up a nice lead so even the Covey miserable performance in the ninth didn't cost them.

Great to win the first game of the series. Now to win the second game. Phillies need to put some wins back to back.

I missed it live and only just watched it a couple of more times.

It's also interesting that inside-the-park home runs even count as home runs. I mean, yeah, you still have to hit the ball pretty far and hard in a different way but if you look at a player's season HR totals you are going to assume they all left the yard.

I felt a little bit the same way about Johan Rojas' triple. Once the ball went over the SF left fielder's head, he trotted after it like there was nothing more at stake. Can you get an error for laziness? Maybe he felt like the runners on base were going to score regardless (which was true) and didn't realize that Rojas was fast enough to take third if the ball wasn't promptly returned to the infield. It could have been just a mental mistake.

I believe mental errors, including mistakes (like throwing to the wrong base or man) are simply not considered errors by the book. Another reason why there's a lot more to defense than just errors. I would assume that will still show up in the LF's DSR rating.

I believe that in the early days of pro baseball, when the term home run was coined, most HRs were of the inside the park variety

The inside-the-park home run is relatively rare and ultimately doesn't distort home run records/totals all that much.

Castellanos better spend some time in the film room, the book on him is obvious, feed him breaking balls low and away and watch him chase. I'd move him down the lineup until he develops some discipline, right now, Bohm and Stott are better hitters.

Castellanos has an 872 OPS the last 14 days. He has never been particularly patient. He is just fine in the lineup where he is. Bohm has a 653 OPS the last 14 days and 718 the last 7 days.

Now Stott may very well deserve to bat 1st or 2nd and ideally you probably flip him with Schwarber. But that is also just not going to happen if the manager prefers Schwarber at the top. You need to break up the lefties and you need to bat Harper 3rd or 4th (because, you know, he is actually better than anyone you mentioned).
