Phillies manage to lose two in Buffalo to the Blue Jays.

Pretty hard to pin down the blame for this second loss. Hitting taking off from the first until two out in the seventh. Velasquez giving up a two run home run in the first after getting a 7 run lead, giving the Jays a slight glimmer of hope. Joe letting Velasquez go out to start the sixth after he miraculously had gotten four shutout innings. The bullpen, never a sure thing. Fielding as Kingery and Didi make key errors, not getting outs that would have ended the bottom of the sixth. Pretty sad and depressing performance all around.

Not even Parker actually. I don't know that you save anyone, some guys can pitch two days in a row, plus, Nola. But moot now.

Romero might not be leaving if Alvarez is hurt.

Well, that's baseball. Show up tomorrow and forget about it.

Did we ever hear if the Phillies took a taxi squad on this trip?

Forgot that Parker pitched in game 1 because I was not watching closely. Might as well try Cleavinger in addition to Jojo and rotate anyone else on the 40 through the roster till you find someone that can pitch. Not sure the injured guys (Arano, Suarez, Robertson) will be available for a week or two.

10 days until trade deadline (by evening's end). At this time last year our owner had already fired the hitting coach.

The Jays aren't as bad as the Sox (and who knows if the O's are good) but once again we seem to play worse against the bad teams. Hard to see them winning 4 of the next 6 with this bullpen and back of the rotation.

Honestly this is completely on Girardi. Waited too long, VV had a good game but he was asked to do something we all expected him to fail at, and waited 3 hitters to prove it.

I can’t put this on Joe. The bull pen is trash. Every inning that he can get out of a SP is one that he doesn’t have to turn over to the kerosene klub.

So instead we got to watch Brogdon fail. And Neris. And the defense. Honestly he could have let Vince stay in for the entire 6th and it might have ended better than it did for Brogdon. Or at least the same.

He should have had someone warmed up, so that Vince only faced the one batter. But again, every manager's the same. Too loyal, quick hook, right or wrong, it happens to all of 'em.

There was some bad luck but the poor defense was the worst thing about it to me. I don't know that we were gonna win that game but I do think Hector could have gotten out of the 8th pretty easily.

Well, this certainly lays out why Joe tried to stick with Velasquez.

• Morgan was not available at all today after throwing 29 pitches yesterday
• Alvarez got hurt (he wouldn't have been available for Game 2 but Hunter might have been
• Hunter's blown save put Guerra in the game instead of Neris.

That meant, in the second game of the doubleheader, this is who Girardi had available in the bullpen:

Connor Brogdon, who had faced 12 batters in his big-league career
JoJo Romero, who has yet to make his MLB debut
Reggie McClain, who had not pitched in 25 days
Cole Irvin, just recalled Thursday from Lehigh Valley to serve as a long man
Neris, his closer

A hellish half-inning is the latest chain reaction in a bad Phillies bullpen

The comparison with the young relievers that Toronto is bringing up is telling. Our young relievers just don't appear to be very good. Some are 6th starter types whose stuff is not really playing up in bullpen stints. We have also been reluctant to train the AAAA starters who actually have a decent fastball (Pivetta, De Los Santos) for the relief role that the team needs. That is a mistake.

Then finally our young relievers after Seranthony have just not been that good. Getting AA and AAA hitters out when you are slightly older (Brogdon) is a lot easier than getting major league hitters out. Klentak just assumed all relievers are fungible and there is safety in numbers. That is not true of course. The relievers need to be good. While we got unlucky with some free agent relief injuries (Robertson), we also have not really acquired enough good arms in the first place. Nick Williams should have been flipped for some organization's out of option relief arm a year and a half ago when we got Bryce Harper.
