Two runs in the ninth doesn’t sting as much with a six run lead, but a shutout would have been extremely nice.

Kudos to Hoskins for the big bases clearing three-run double and to Nola for his superb seven inning shut out start.

I would like our relievers to pitch better when it counts, I really don't care about a few baserunners or runs with a six-run lead. Even if we have seen the Phillies defy the win probability gods a few times.

Things will feel very different if they can finish this series off. We still haven't lost much ground in the division.

Russo flashed good stuff, one bad mistake, but showed promise.
I'd rather live with inconsistency with Russo, Brogdon and Romero than have to watch Kelley et al.
At least with the kids there's hope.

Trevor Kelley's only 27 years old. He had 8.1 career major league innings before this season. They were hoping he'd be lightning in a bottle just as much as the rest of this bunch.

The real issue is still that the known-ish quantities - Pivetta, Irvin, Suarez, Robertson, Arano - have failed or aren't available, and the same is true of Guerra and McLain. If two of those guys were getting it done Hunter wouldn't be our fourth-best reliever and we'd have ample time to roll the dice on kids. But because they aren't, a more reliable proven reliever, or just an erratic but more experienced, has obviously been needed.

Not that I think he will be good, but I had to look up Austin Davis. To the contrary, he hasn’t bounced around for years. He was draft3d in 2014 and worked his way up the minors to the big club in 2018 where he pitched 32 innings in 32 games ding so-so as a 25 year old. It was just such a throw-away statement of dismissal that wasn’t true.

Davis turned 27 in February, at this point he's no longer a prospect, and I don't see any signs of improvement.
He showed some promise in 2018, went backward in 2019, and I don't see any change in 2020.
FB is 93-94 with little movement, slider and changeup are both meh pitches.
He's an "Oakland" pitcher, "there's no there there."

Davis hit 95 a lot more often when he came up. He has not lost much velocity, but there sure seem to be more nights these days he is sitting 93 and his secondary stuff is not good enough at that velocity.

Oakland's a great city. She'd love it now.

But yes, Davis was already marginal entering this season. He's lasted this long because he's a lefty, and might have benefited from one more half-season in AAA, but he never really progressed beyond his short period of early MLB success.

The problem is over the past two season they've cycled through Ramos, Rios, Austin Davis, J.D. Hammer, De Los Santos and Edgar Garcia without getting one even one Arano or Seranthony (and now both those guys are hurt). Arms with upside may be better than washed-up AAAA guys but in the short-term - which is all there is in 2020, at least until the playoffs are out of reach - one is not more likely than the other to get outs, and experience - especially the experience to shake off a bad game - helps.

That isn’t what I argued. I didn’t say he was a prospect. I said you were wrong to say he had “bounced around for years.” It’s a cliche that didn’t apply to him. Andy’s is right. He was plus 95 when he came up in 2018.
