First couple balls to the first hitter could easily been called strikes. It does make a difference in the way the at bat unfolds.

Then Hernandez almost turns a routine play into a no out play. A double play was probably not going to happen, but he should have had the runner at second and a shot at the DP.

Not the clean 1-2-3 inning we like, but Dominguez looked strong, especially with the back to back K's to end the game.

A nice win for Aaron Nola and while no save for SD, a good outing for him and for the pen (at least after Davis).

Phillies record now 65-51.

Braves are 63-51. One game behind the Phillies.
Nationals are 60-57. In third place, 5.5 games behind the Phillies.

It's still fun to watch Galvis play. I was so impressed by the double play they almost turned on Santana. Galvis glove flip to Spangenberg who caught it barehand and threw to first. That's some really fine defense.

you're right andyb, about alfaro's defense. the kid has a heckuva arm (as we all know). that play he made on that swinging bunt, late in the game, where he went up the third base side and spun and threw the runner out was a beauty. gunned that throw. hopefully he keeps improving. The phils seem to have a number of catchers below him in the minors that have possibilities.

Watching the Padres brings back the trade that some on here were strongly advocating a while back. Wasn't it Renfroe, a pitcher names Wisler or something like that and someone else. Did any of their guys pan out?

The Padres believe he is now one of the best catchers in baseball and hits with power, can run [2 stolen bases against the Phils this week] and is an excellent defensive catcher and pitch framer. Renfroe is doing well also, and coming into the Phillies series, had hit homers in 4 games in a row.

Amaro wanted Renfroe, Hedges and Wisler for Hamels and depending on your views on Williams, Alfaro and Eickhoff you can decide which deal made more sense. Wisler now pitches for the Braves. Renfroe and Hedges are two young mainstays on a young Padre team.
