Of course but if they are not going to score more than three runs and one of our best relievers isn't going to preserve a tie, giving up more prospects for a new starting pitcher would be even more unnecessary and wasteful. Especially when Phillips has been good and Walker will be back (sounds like Turnbull is not going to be on track to return to even a six-man rotation).
Last year Covey made a similar impression if I recall and the Phillies ultimately went with bullpen games instead of a 5th starter per se. I think when you are down to your 8th or 9th guy it's all semantics. Usually when the Phillies go with a guy like this we just hope he can go three or four innings. Turnbull and Phillips spoiled us.
The irony is if he had pitched worse the game would have been less winnable and Thomson would have used lesser relievers, or if they had viewed it as a bullpen game they could have had someone scripted to enter after three or four. Instead they used every good one one on the team.
