Pivetta was throwing mostly 4 seamers and sliders, hung a curve and didn't trust it, hung a couple sliders and ran out of pitches.
He's an example why velocity isn't enough, his 4 seamer is hard to hit, but you can't get away with 90% four seamers in the majors, which is why he goes deep into pitch counts, hitters time his FB and start fouling it off.
Pivetta needs to improve his secondary pitches, but he also needs a 2 seamer with movement to pair with a 4 seamer he can throw at the top of the K zone or on the outside edge, and eventually a change up that he can tail away from LH hitters. Without a full arsenal, he'll be a back of the rotation guy at best and eventually move to the bullpen.
Notice Kapler kept Thompson in there with the game within reach, must be worried about overusing his young RPs and felt that a lower chance of winning this game was worth having fresh arms the next few games. Fortunately, Thompson only gave up 1 run in 2 IP.
