If this was July 2008 we'd be complaining about Bruntlett and Jenkins and Taguchi and our light-hitting starting catcher. A few years later it'd be Wilson Valdez. No bench player is a good option in double-digit game.

The idea was that Franco's turn in the order wouldn't have come up again. Obviously it didn't work out. But it wasn't gonna if the pitcher made the first out of that inning too. (The idea that pitchers don't hit any better than Plouffe, I do concede.)

It's about the right time to bring Valdez in to pitch, though.

Trevor Plouffe does have 105 ML home runs and a career OPS of .713, but I have not really seen much from him in his short time with the Phillies.

I agree that you play to win as soon as possible, but the manager also has to consider the possibility of an extended game. I always hated seeing a good hitter taken out in a double switch in a game that could well go extra innings. I agree, most all managers do it in the NL.
