Pitch was clearly ball four and Knapp should never given them the chance to call him out. I think he also fouled one for strike two that was a ball, but hard to tell with this ump tonight.

Can someone please tell Alfaro that he doesn’t have to hit the ball 700 feet. Guy consistently over swings.

Tough game to lose to start the series at home with the Dodgers. Plenty of things to like but again, just too many mistakes. The little things win or lose games and the Phillies still are making far too many mistakes to be a truly great team. However, I think we are on the right track and improving.

Record falls to 55-44. Back down to 11 over .500
Braves and Phillies tied for first in the NL East (Braves ahead on percentage points with 54-43 record)

That was a good effort against Jansen at least, including by Kingery.

Really this is what a young, good team is supposed to look like against an older, very good team. The mistakes, the things that don't seem to break their way, those things are ultimately the difference between a .525-.550 type team and a .575-.600 type team. The reason the bullpen drives us so crazy is the margin for error is so thin with these guys (but they've still won a lot more of these nailbiters than they've lost).

Don't look now, but Franco raised his OPS to .794 - went 3 for 4 with 2 home runs tonight.

This was a good test for the Phillies. Kept it close, but ultimately the win went to the team that traded for Machado - he made a difference in tonight’s game.

He did, but a better starting pitcher and he doesn't get that opportunity.

Maybe Zach Britton pitches a perfect 9th for us too.

Who knows - if we would have traded for Machado he might have been starting in place of Franco tonight in our lineup. All just speculation, but we still have a pretty big hole in our lineup at SS. I’m not here to bash Kingery; it would be great if he figures things out. I just hope there is some improvement in the SS position between now and the end of the season.

I feel like they're gonna get a infielder, but it's gonna be a bat who isn't that great at SS defensively. But since Kingery isn't either, and Crawford hadn't been....

A Kingery/Crawford/Quinn bench instead of Walding/Plouffe/Altherr would be an upgrade but Kingery and Crawford would face the same challenges Altherr did. Williams certainly rose to that role though.

They are young and they are trying. We didn't expect this for this year. hopefully they can hang in this thing for a couple more weeks and get some crowd out there. at least until the kids go back to school. nola hasn't been drilled in a long time and this lineup can rake. i hope he can hold them down tonight. it could be ugly (weather and the game).
