Glad Middleton literally put his money where his mouth is by giving him his AS bonus. But, got to admit, that kid from Milwaukee who took Sanchez's spot did well in the ASG.

I don't think I'm going out on a limb to say that so far we've won the Mead for Sanchez deal. Just chalking it up to WAR, it's 10.4 for Sanchez, .4 for Mead.

The Mead for Sanchez deal is such a strange story. Reportedly the TB Rays reached out to Philly for Mead, not the other way around. Phils looked at possible returns and chose Sanchez, and that choice seems to have turned out well even if his debut year was rocky. Credit to the Phils’ scouting, or to their development staff, or to dumb luck, I guess...

Mead is still well-regarded (Rays’ #2 prospect in BBA rankings), although he is having an off year in AAA with the bat this season. They say he has a 65 hit tool, a higher grade than anyone in the Phils’ system. I’m pretty sure the Phils would not choose to reverse the trade now in the 2025 season, though, although they are going to have to pay Sanchez soon.

Except they aren't really. He's signed/controlled through 2030 and will still be making less in those last two years than Walker is now. By then that will look like 5th starter money for sure, and if he flames out or gets hurt the last two years aren't even guaranteed. The contract is an even bigger win for the Phillies than the trade.

His option years do have escalator clauses if he has a top 10 CY finish, don't know if that's during the life of the contract or just the year prior to each option.

Sánchez’s four-year contract covers his pre-free agent years at $22.5 million. The best value, as far as the Phillies are concerned, are two team options at $14 million for 2029 and $15 million for 2030. Sánchez would pitch those seasons at ages 32 and 33, respectively.

The Phillies were not looking to extend Sánchez in June 2024; the pitcher’s agent, Gene Mato, approached the club with the idea. Sánchez wanted security. He received a $2 million signing bonus.

The franchise could benefit from it in a massive way.

“Obviously, it’s not the best contract in the world; it’s not the worst one, either,” Sánchez told The Athletic last month. “But I’m much calmer. I’m focusing more on baseball right now, so it’s allowed me to stay focused on my career and give my best here.”

Yeah he really gave up a lot letting the Phillies have the non-guaranteed option on two FA years past age 31. He could end up with nothing in 2029 or 2030 if he gets hurt, though if he stays this good he'll be able to come back and get a new deal. And obvious he is happy and got life-changing money. It's the kind of the deal the Braves have also managed to get with a few guys [albeit still bigger numbers/stars in their case].

If he finishes this deal and is still this good he'll get one more major contract or the Phillies will be happy to not have to overpay a 34 year-old FA.

I suspect if he is still healthy and good by 2029 the Phillies might seek to extend him. Make the 2 options guaranteed, add a signing bonus, and tack on 2 more years at $25 million or so on the back end.

Sure. would be a nice problem to have. If he's healthy and this good it might be more like $40M though assuming salaries are higher then, or 30 AAV if they tear up the two options. He actually snuck ahead of Wheeler [who makes $42M in present-day $] in WAR last night. Nola will still be making $25.5 in those same two years as Sanchez's options.
