It's always something. Hector's Hector (and by the way Craig Kimbrel has a 9.74 ERA). I really thought they were going to blow it before he got in, tbh.
I'm with you, they can't just say "oh well" and finish the season at .500. Cashner wasn't that expensive. But there is also good reason not to be aggressive (and obviously a vocal majority of our minor league-loving board feels that way). Saving the season depends on believing the bullpen can get back to better strength and a couple of the existing starters can bounce back. It is not realistic to acquire two starters and three relievers, let alone a position player on top of that. So if you don't think Eflin, Pivetta and Robertson (if not Seranthony) can deliver, why bother?
This rotation was supposed to be supported by a deep bullpen and and strong offense. Most teams really can't survive the losses this roster has suffered (80% of the bullpen - funny how Nicasio is now greatly missed - and 25% of the line-up, and now Arrieta's injury on top of that). I don't think they should do nothing (though get back to me if they go 1-4 or 0-5 the rest of the week). But they shouldn't do much.
