Of course, there will be games like this. A tough loss in a game they were up by two. Bullpen really wasn’t that bad but did give up some runs. A win tomorrow will be great.

I'm sure every team that's not over .600 (there's four of those) struggles to sweep often, and probably almost never on the road. And the Phillies are still closer to .500 than .600.

But they can still win this one if all this reverse jinxing has anything to say about it.

I had forgotten about tomorrow's game. But, they are 4-10 on Sundays this season. They are eleven games over .500 the rest of the week.

So it might be Sundays. Or 1pm starts (though we've had night games too). How many of those 14 games would have completed a (winning) sweep?

Hope they can keep it going tomorrow especially with the unknown of the Toronto line-up (and another bullpen game already guaranteed).

Midweek day games (1:00 pm starts) haven't been problematic. But Sundays have been.

Ok. It's because too many of them are evangelical Christians, and they're on collective guilt trips about working/playing on Sunday.

It's random and a cherry pick but a .285 winning percentage on Sunday is pretty stark. And Jayson Stark owes half his livelihood to pretending to explain such things.

I looked into it further and four of the 2022 Phillies' Sunday losses thwarted a series sweep (4/10 vs. OAK, 5/15 @ LAD, 6/12 va, ARI, 6/10 @ WSH) while a fifth followed wins on a Friday and Saturday in a weekend "wraparound" series (7/10 @ STL).

And, I must correct my earlier record. The Phillies have a 5-10 record on Sundays. I overlooked that doubleheader against the Mets. But still, 25% of their losses are on Sundays. Winning percentage Monday to Saturday is .577 but on Sunday it's .333. That's a 54 win team on Sunday, a 93 win team the rest of the week. I suppose one could argue that the Phillies are what they are and Sunday--for whatever odd, crazy, stupid reason--is the day that drags them back to their statistical norm.

I don't think anyone is trying to draw statistically valid inferences, it's just a quirky fact - a thing that has actually happened, without there necessarily being a reason for it (let alone something that is repeatable/projectable/correctable).

Would still be interesting to kick around other factors, such as strength of opponent, how many regulars typically get rest days on Sunday and how often our two best pitchers have gone on Sunday.

Of course another small-sample/variable is that 9 of those games were managed by Joe Girardi, who went 2-7.
