A tough loss tonight. Great pitching, almost got out of the ninth. Phillies offense didn't score enough tonight, but the Blue Jay pitching was also very good tonight.

Try to win the series tomorrow afternoon.

The loss is down to the hitters. Opposing pitchers with ERAs over 3 and we score 1. Key was 5th inning with zero runs out of bases loaded and 1 out.

That's a pretty cheesy stat to bring up.

Watching the recap, I'm convinced that Marsh would have caught the triple in the sixth if Kepler hadn't been bearing down on him. Marsh slide early to avoid colliding with Kepler and almost made the play. No Kepler, he continues one more step and makes the running catch.

We have to be encouraged by another great outing from Abel, and Kerkering, Strahm, and Banks all did well out of the pen.

Hoffman gets the win, Romano the loss.

I don't think so. He's been solid for over a month, with one other poor game. Hoffman has been a train wreck during that same period. And yet he was the better pitcher tonight. That's bullpens for you. Strahm has a loss and two blown saves in the past three weeks himself. But overall, Romano and Kerkering have been trending well in Alvarado's absence.

But he hasnt been right since the bad A's game. 4 of the last 5 games hes had to throw 20+ pitches for an inning or less. In those 4.1IP over those 5 games hes thrown 109 pitches. Hes walked 5 and given up 7 hits. Thats a WHIP of almost 3. His K rate is good though. 8Ks in 4.1IP in those 5 games.

Fair enough, but I still think it's just ups and downs. It's happening all over the league and that's what makes it so hard to get help at the deadline too. And also why it wasn't necessarily dumb of the Phillies to not commit more money and years to Hoffman.

ERA is a deceptive stat for relievers in my opinion because of the small sample size.

To me it is always better to look at percentage of no-run games. He only gave up a run in one game in May (but 3 runs). He has been better since the disastrous 6 run game in April, but as LSP pointed out, the last few games have been dicey.

We really do need some upgrades in the bullpen. Walker and Suarez are waiting in the wings, but honestly I really think we need another solid reliever (or two)

WHIP is a generally a pretty good stat overall but the SSS still prevails there too. I don't think it's a reliever's job to never allow runs. Tonight it would have been nice though.

If Romano or the rest of the bullpen don't give up a run the game might still be being played as I am not convinced the offense would have ever scored another run!

Also bad defense bites the Phillies again. Marsh should have had Bichette's "triple". Fortunately Kettering came in and stranded Bichette on 3B.
Rojas would have caught that ball. It isn't the first time that Marsh has not been able to handle balls that Rojas would have. I realize that Rojas is not the best hitter on the club but his ability to field outweighs his deficiencies at the plate too much.
