I think he wanted to save Mercado and thought a couple of the 1-inning guys could go tomorrow if needed. I am sure they wanted 5 out of Turnbull too ideally. At least most of those relief innings were not too stressful. Getting a lead and not walking anyone is a good way to keep a lead and a bullpen relatively fresh.

Supposedly several of them needed the work. And tomorrow's a Wheeler game (though I guess we've said that before). If Turnbull's not going on the IL Mercado will be available early if needed, and if he is, there will be another arm.

I'm starting to get both excited and nervous about July. But first, beat the Marlins as much as possible!

I wouldn’t assume we just don’t have a reliever game, even if it is Mercado starting. He probably is on an extremely short leash with 4 IP being the max.

Time for a trade yet? Maybe even a very minor one for a spot starter type? Covey anywhere near being available?

I think you give it a couple of weeks before you think pitching trade. If Walker is bothered only by a blister that should heal. No idea yet about Turnbull also. If they wanted bulk innings they could just go get Pinto again for 10 days and DFA him when somebody is back. Lazar is more a 1-inning guy so he does not solve the problem unless they decide to start Mercado (which they can do though I fear he is not ready to go through a major league lineup a second time. MLB is tougher than AAA and he is not used to starting.

I think they will happily go bullpen game, however you define that, for 2-3 weeks. It's unclear whether Covey is shut down or just kind of parked on the 60 at this point. But nobody wants that either.

God forbid, if Turnbull is seriously hurt, it just means Walker returns, so long as he can improve throwing that splitter at least somewhat. Somehow our expectation of what a 5th starter looks like (and also what a #8 or #9 hitter looks like) has gotten seriously inflated (which I suppose is also a credit to Turnbull, more than the team's overall success. And to Sanchez who no longer is one). A trade would just get you another Covey type.
