I have a bad feeling that Sunday was one gutpunch loss too many. I think they go quietly into the night tomorrow, win 2-1 behind Nola despite getting only three hits on Thursday but then lose the rest of the series to the Nats.

I love watching Baseball, don't mind watching the other teams feed (sometimes it is very nice to learn about another team,), but being forced to watch the Yankees feed is awful. I won't do it. They are just aggravating.

If this series is any consolation, it should send a message to management once and for all, just in case there were any delusions, that this team is pretty far short of being a championship contender. It's a gap that they cannot count on closing only with the development of the young players on the roster and perhaps a few additions from the system.

There is no conclusion that can be drawn other than a conclusion that impact talent--superstar talent--is necessary to add to this team if ownership wants it to achieve the stated goal.

The expectation this offseason should be nothing less than doing everything it takes to add at least one big-time free agent, and more.

YMMV, but I'd rather watch the bullpen blow a game than a game the team had no chance of winning for all nine innings (basically).

I don't think the Nats loss matters one bit. The Yankees are just that good. Significantly better than the Nats too. Also, even with unearned runs and the Neris blown saves, our prize pitcher hasn't been getting it done lately.

Agree with Schooldoc tho, a game like this is why you don't give up much talent for a reliever and an extra bat, because they need more than those things. Adding a Hamels would only hurt another pitcher's development too. That's fine when you are trading J.A. Happ for Roy Oswalt to go to another World Series but not so much for where this team is.

The big-time free agent is coming though. that's a given. Just a question of who (and, if they can't get one of the top two guys, how old/for how long). There will also be trades. I wouldn't rule out a deadline deal for a controllable player, regardless of how it affects the wild card race.

Sign Machado this off season and shore up the bullpen. Ready a great package for Trout next July and the offense should be ready. Of course, I don't know what it would take to get Trout, but if the Angels are not doing well, they might trade a season and a half next July. Regardless, I expect the Phillies will make a big play for Machado and if they can't sign him, then they will play for Harper. I think Machado is the top target for the off season. I'm pretty sure the front office is not only counting on the farm for improvement for 2019. I think they will sign a couple free agents and/or make a couple trades prior to spring training 2019.

Arrieta has had some bad luck this season. He has lost a couple wins due to blown saves in the ninth. I recall Neris cost him wins in back to back starts earlier this year. The play in the field behind Arrieta has been worse than the normal for the team this year. Of course, he has not on several occasions been able to shut a team down and overcome bad fielding. Still, he has been a solid starter at the top of the rotation and I believe has provided some stability for the young starters in the 3, 4, and 5 slots.

The state of the defense makes a strong case for @andyb's position - as things currently stand, Machado shouldn't be the SS. Now, it's entirely possible he'll be better after one year back at the position, but it's not your best line-up (regardless of whether Crawford, Franco or Kingery play 3B).

It’s only one poorly played game in a season against a good team. The Braves lost to the Reds last night so we didn’t lose any ground. Look on the bright side our bullpen did an outstanding job last night. Neris has been great since he has come back. Bad games don’t mean we sux! The Yankees were just swept by Tampa Bay, it’s baseball, it happens.

BTW Jake Arrieta better do something to make Jobu happy, things have gone really bad for him since his rant after the SF game. That must have really upset the Beisbol gods!

yes, i'll agree on the right fielder too. i thought after last year that Altherr was the ticket. looks like i was wrong. they are not in the yanks class yet but they are at least 1 year away. i would like to see a win today and not be swept. and hope they don't lose 3 out of 4 to the nationals. then take on july strongly. arrieta will be ok. just hope the young guns can keep up their very good starting.

What's also sobering as a National League fan is how the Astros, Red Sox and Yankees appear to be in a class by themselves, at least by looking at run differential (+173, +120, +108 respectively). The next closest team, the Cubs, is -23 behind (+85). Two of those AL powerhouses will have to face off in a five games ALDS while one of the AL East duo will have to put it all on the line in a one-game wild card play-in. The Phillies, meanwhile, are just +10 which only puts them eighth in the NL. Yeah, this series is a mismatch.

Things can change a lot over 2-3 years. It doesn't matter for now. I'd be thrilled if the Phillies lost the WS this year or the next two. Realistically, we are in the battle for a wildcard. That was my hope for this year.

Realistically we are in the battle for the division too. While the Braves have the lead they are starting to come down to earth losing 4 of the last 6 to the Orioles and the Reds. Their July schedule resembles the Phillies June schedule playing 18 games against the Cards, Yankees, Brewers, Diamondbacks, Nats, and Dodgers. As for the Nats they are beat up and playing poorly too. This division could go to any of these three teams.

Yes, haven't checked the Braves schedule that closely, but seeing the ticker report they are playing the Reds or Orioles or Padres or the current Mets every time we're playing a good team has been annoying.

The Phillies are going to win 85-90 games and if they do make the postseason anything can happen. They just don't need make a postseason run at any cost, i.e. don't give up too much talent and don't give up too soon on the players who are here. If they pursue controllable talent though, that opens up a lot more scenarios.

Arrieta is about what I expected, he's a good but not great pitcher who is no longer a #1 starter, and 3 years was the right decision instead of panicking and throwing money and term at him.
He has great movement, but his command is shaky at times, when he's on he's hard to hit, but he leaves too many pitches over the middle of the plate at times.
His numbers are almost identical to last season, Ks down a little.
A 2-3 WAR pitcher, a 2/3 guy. Hopefully he'll hold up two more seasons.

Meanwhile, Darvish is making Chicago regret "trading" Arrieta for him as he's off to a bad start.

Just proves the point I keep making, stockpile young arms and spend on bats.
Harper could be a bargain pickup this winter.
