It's really impossible to know why the offense is struggling (20 innings without a run) but it sure has looked bad of late. Hoskins is out but he was in a month of decline when he got hurt. Phillies had a runner on third with one out in two innings early in the game and didn't come close to getting a run in. By the late innings, they looked pathetic as they went down without making the Giants seem to break a sweat. It is especially concerning that they look so bad against pitchers who are giving up plenty of runs to other teams. I know it is a long season and all teams have ups and downs. They can and I hope will start producing runs soon.
I also have concerns about the general sloppy play of late, especially in the field. Tonight, both runs could have been prevented by better throws from the shortstop. Of course, that might have just meant we would be watching a scoreless game in extra innings now.
Phillies pitching continues to exceed our wildest hopes. Another outstanding start from Velasquez tonight, and good pitching from the bullpen as well. It's a shame to lose games with pitching this good.
Record now 31-25. Fall to only 6 over .500 and lose two in a row again. They really need a win tomorrow.
