It's becoming a fair question whether this is all that good a team at this point or just the same team as last year now except with Harper instead of Santana, for all practical purposes, and Realmuto instead of Alfaro. Our run differential is now only +.1 and our pythagorean record is a rather pedestrian 36-35.

The loss of a high OBP guy like Cutch is really hurting the offense. Less of a problem of course when Bruce was hot.

The pitching was never really supposed to be much better than average. The bullpen was supposed to be a bit better, but injuries killed that.

The real organizational management issue with this is that we don’t have players on the farm to fix our issues and our running out of luxury cap room to fix it with money.

I am guessing we will be aggressive in the starting pitching trade market. The question is whether we should have saved prospects and gone after Keuchel will be raised of course.

Now there is also a case to make that it was the right decision to see where this team was in June or July before figuring out what additional moves to make. Haseley as an OF solution for Cutch, for instance, is not resolved.

I think the failure to go after Keuchel is a big issue. We have very little to offer on the trade market. I have read a couple of columns suggesting that if we want to trade for a decent starting pitcher, it will cost us Haseley as part of the package since he is the only prospect we have who is really close to MLB ready. That would be very upsetting to me; fail to go after Keuchel who would cost only money and then have to trade our best prospect to get a decent starter thru trades. I think it has been pretty clear that we have needed another starter almost since the third week of the season.

We are in Klentak's fourth season as GM already. I would say that this season and next together are put up or shut time. As for Kapler, he is an unconventional manager and the same probably applies to him, too.

That is true as well...that we ended up with just a mediocre farm system despite years of subpar baseball. It would stink to have to trade Haseley for a mid-rotation starter but he doesn't look like a future star, either.

The challenge certainly is there for our GM. Frankly, I don't know what is possible but I hate to see them over pay for veterans who won't be around for more than a year or two. I want to build a contender that can be maintained for multiple years. Of course, easier said than done.

I do expect we see a couple of players added between now and July 31. Perhaps the missed opportunity was in trading for Minor from the Rangers, but of course, I don't know what it would have taken to get him during the off season. I know the price is much higher now given his season to date and the Rangers improved performance this season.

Regardless, Ill be back for game 2 and for the majority of the remaining games. I'd love to see some multiple game winning streaks.

This is not a team of bad players (well, bullpen not included), but the offensive approach is just awful. They only seem to feast when there is momentum (all the more reason to bat Kingery leadodf now). No one knows what they are trying to get these guys to do, but it sure as heck isn’t working. Watching the Dodgers applied offensive approach against the Phillies “approach” looked like varsity vs jv. It feels like they are trying to catch up to the approach that was modern 4 years ago and not the one that is beating them today.

BThe injuries have been a set back. It’s rough when the replacements for them go down as well. I don’t see the system as being devoid of talent. Hasely has potential; so does Moniak. Bohm looks to be special.
What I don’t care for is the three outcomes sort of ball that the club is playing. There are too many strike outs in the line up. Walks are nice but hits drive in more runs. Frankly I find this club to be boring to watch.
Currently I live out of town. Will be back in July for a while. It’s a trek to go to the park but if they played better ball, I’d do it. Maybe next year but not for this club as it is.

Without too many significant young players though, can we really project this core to get better? It has a few years, but the 2019 bet of Segura and Realmuto was to win now. The free agents could have happened anyway. Those 2 trades were about winning today though and those 2 players will probably not get better. They are already good and at an age where they are what they are.

Without McCutchen, a CF and a much more productive Harper, Segura and Realmuto (and Hernandez) just look like decent complementary players. I certainly go all-in on this core (which Herrera and Cutch were also part of) if things are moving in the right direction (health-wise and performance-wise) but if not....

Personally I still think Kapler is doing a good job. The last 10 days to two weeks have been a disaster and if there is a collapse going on it's not because of chemistry or managing, if anything those things kept it from happening sooner. You could easily sacrifice the hitting coach right now but that never seems to actually work either.

If you want to be negative I think it's fair to ask, given Realmuto and Harper's performance as well as Franco's complete irrelevance, if they messed up not getting Machado. If Harper is never again a consistent .900 OPS player we didn't get the better guy, and if he never has another. 950 season we didn't get the MVP-level guy we wanted for the money either.
