I don't know what to suggest for Velasquez. Would more time in AAA working in relief help him or is he just what he is?

Vince has been pretty good in his new relief role except for one bad outing against the Brewers. Maybe we need to abandon this idea of an opener and let him settle in a 7th or 8th inning role.

True, Velasquez has done well in a couple relief outings. Maybe he was not the right pitcher to be the "opener" today and would have done better coming in after Irvin. Of course, we really don't know. Just have to climb back from the 3 run deficit.

Edit: Call over turned thankfully. That would have been the horrible icing on the terrible cake for him.

Don't see that happen often. Only three batters to the plate and two get hits. Incredibly bad results.

A successful sacrifice by Knapp might have lead to a run but I realize that is not the way the game is played in the 21st century. Still, Velasquez is hitting over 40 points higher than Knapp this season.

EDIT: Replay extends the inning. Still it was closer than it should have been.

They really are facing a tall hill today if two starters aren't even available off the bench. That may actually be why they decided to start Velasquez, and perhaps want 5 from him.

I’m about done with Knapp as the backup catcher. He might be the worst in the league from an overall skill standpoint. He’s not good with the bat, he’s doesn't have a good arm, he’s not a great game called, not a very good framer, is awful on the basepaths. His only redeeming quality is that he has a decent eye. There are better backup catchers in most peoples minor league systems. We are no longer in development mode so get rid of him.

Also if you are going to start him and start and opener (who happens to be Vince), it is probably the day to have the pitcher bat 8th.
