It does make sense that the rule is by appearance not innings but I wasn't sure. They are just lucky Brogdon is re-emerging as a late option, especially as Familia doesn't seem to be.
Bohm is in a slump while the team is 8-0, so just let him play through it probably, at least until they have other players. They could give Vierling a game there but probably better to just let him face a lefty in CF.
Bumgarner is the pitcher today so I imagine both Bohm and Vierling (CF) will be in the lineup. Another off game for Bohm though and I would not be shocked to see Vierling get a start at 3B. Of course we could rest Stott against the tough lefty, but I am not sure we really want Vierling's first infield start to be at 2B (though one could imagine some Max Muncy-like skills in Vierling).
Edit - And we do get Vierling at 2B today. Should be interesting. And the manager makes the right call by giving Didi the day off against the LHP instead of Stott. Let the kid play. Let the veteran coming off an injury have a day off.
Girardi would not have put this lineup together. No idea about Vierling's defense at 2B though imagine we'll see Didi the last couple of innings if we have a lead. Or if we need a pinch hit HR because that is how Rob Thomson rolls....
As far as I can see Vierling has never played an inning at 2B. Can't remember if he did it in Spring Training but I kind of doubt it. There was a brief intro to 3B last season at LHV and he did play some 3B at Notre Dame but that is it.
Now we see how much they actually did not want Kingery to have to bat in an actual game.
It's possible the Phillies weren't sure who they wanted to keep at the time but then Vierling made the most of that one AB, and of course he's much more MLB-ready than Kingery over the past year. And I think we all already agree that just getting Kingery one start or a few ABs before sending him back down wasn't gonna help him either.
Question is will they value Vierling RHB more than Maton's fielding ability once Camargo and Maton are both ready. Obviously any plan to give Maton regular 2B starts seems unnecessary now.
