Not much to say when your pitchers give up 8 home runs. Offense normally would be enough to win most games but not tonight.

Need to come back and take the next two games and win this series.

There is something mechanically wrong with Eickhoff, all his breaking balls were waist high or above, to me, that sounds like a problem with his release point.

Suarez isn't ML ready, but he has ML stuff, 92-94 4-seamer, slider, working on the changeup.
This is where the revolving door helps and hurt, it teaches the kids they need to improve, but disrupts their pitching schedule.

Eickhoff became the first Phillies pitcher to allow five homers in a game since Dustin McGowan on June 16, 2015 at Baltimore. He also was only the first Phillies pitcher since Vicente Padilla on April 19, 2005 to allow five homers while recording nine outs or fewer.

What is wrong with Eickhoff is that he is not a MLB pitcher. When You can''t break 90 on "the gun", you better be Jamie Moyer and Eickhoff is not Moyer. The Phils got rid of Eshelman, Eickhoff should be next. I understand that a couple of his initial starts had a "field of dream" but he is just not good enough to keep around. If the Phils think their rotation is so weak that they needed Eickhoff in the rotation, they should have gone after Keuchel.

Keuchel also struggles to break 90 on the gun. Also, according to fangraphs, Eickhoff's AVERAGE FB is 90.5 mph, so he sits over 90 most nights. That is down 1.5 mph from last season, and he could use that extra velocity. Perhaps that is something that can be addressed mechanically, or is a consequence of him being out for half a season.

Keuchel has shown a Moyeresque ability to get by with a lesser fastball. Eickhoff has not. Plus Keuchel may be able to get back the mile per hour he has lost as he rounds back into pitching shape. Eickhoff is what he is, a pitcher with a meager fastball and inconsistent control. Not a good combination.

Interesting.... Over his first 3 seasons in the MLB.. Keuchel pitched 439 innings. Thats the EXACT number Eichoff is at after his start last night

Eickhoff clearly was a better pitcher when he was pitching in the 92-93 range. He probably did well early in the year because the ball was not carrying as well. He really needs to miss more bats in today's game to be effective.

What should they do now? I am guessing they'll cycle through the 5th spot a bit. Give De Los Santos a shot certainly. Evaluate Velasquez and whether they think he is better as a reliever or a starter. This likely ends with a trade though for another pitcher.

Keuchel's loss of velocity is over time, not from his one minor league game after a long layoff.

But I doubt the light is going to turn on for Eickhoff in Year 4 with a Cy Young. And we're probably not going to find out. I personally think it was the injuries that derailed him, if he'd been healthy maybe he could have pitched through some of these struggles, and maybe when he's a full year removed from all the injuries he'll get some velocity back.

Clearly we just need a pitcher who misses more bats, period. At least our homer-happy staff doesn't need great defense!
