Solid start to the west coast trip. Feels good watching a win!

Just back from the park. Chilly evening, so it was a surprise the Phils hit like they did, even after the travel and DH. Suarez's sinker dominated M's hitters. Hoskins' swing looks loopy, homer notwithstanding. Great to see some offense!

Suarez, who seemed kinda lost the first couple starts, is down to a 3.68 ERA. We really need him to be an "above average" starter, not crazy like last year, but above average would really help.

Seattle's lineup, at least for today, cant hit at all. 5 guys under .200, 2 guys at .200 and 2 guys above .200. I think we should almost be ashamed we gave them 4 hits, this might be the best hitting game that group has had all year.

When I started predicting the Phillies might not win a series in May the Mariners were like 10-6. Of course then the Phillies went out and lost their most winnable series on paper (the Rangers) so it would be great to get this one. Of course they face the Cy Young winner today and have lost their own should-have Cy Young guy tomorrow (and the M's pitcher is also good).

We might be catching Seattle without their best player, some gold glove SS with a .981 OPS...

Though realistically Seattle was overperforming early. They are a young and improving team where a .500 record would be a nice year for them.

I mean, they won 90 games last year. They are kind of the Phillies if the Phillies had stayed in rebuild mode longer, or were just a little more patient (about anything), or had more young talent, obviously. DiPoto was hired the same year as his pal Klentak and is now in his 7th season, with the promotion to President last year.

OTOH while he's had three winning season, they still haven't made the playoffs (and for a lot longer than the Phillies).

The other measuring stick is probably the Padres, where Preller is still hanging on. Not saying the Phillies should have kept Klentak, just too bad they didn't hire better (starting with MacPhail) in the first place.

We will never know how well Klentak would have done as our GM, if fossil MacPhail wasn't there to babysit him and he didn't have a novice analytical staff foisted upon him and accorded expert status. Same with Kapler. That part actually is on Middleton: he wants the team to be forward looking and go with the up-and-coming wunderkinds, but then doesn't let them do their jobs. I don't think Phillies ownership ever truly trusted anyone beyond the white haired bunch. Likely why we've always had so many senior advisors adding their discordant voices. RAJ also never got respect from owners.

I don't know that the analytics guys were "foisted" on him. He inherited a few, he hired a few, but the failings we saw during the years of Kapler especially were from Klentak's staff (including our current GM, who was in charge of all the terrible shifts).

What's clear, I think, is in some ways the team would be in no better or worse shape if Klentak (and Kapler) had not been fired. We'd also still have Barber. But clearly Klentak did not have the charisma or political skills to really overhaul the franchise, and MacPhail, well.... Phailed him.
