I really don't care what these guys get paid. The Phillies can afford it. MLB can afford it. The balance sheet has very little to do with results, and Nola was wildly underpaid for many years of his career because that's how the system works. Older pitchers are always a little nerve-wracking, though I don't remember anyone accusing Cliff Lee and Roy Halladay of stealing the Phillies money at the end of their contracts. I still hope Nola returns, and that he has a couple of very good years left in him. That this isn't one of them is hardly surprising.
I'm still in the "they aren't out of it in the modern MLB" camp, but the difference between this year and last year is June does not provide a softer landing schedule-wise.
