Where is the closer? Misplaying a ball that either of two outfielders should have easily caught leads to a loss that should not have happened.

Dombrowski was also asked about the man he serves as boss to, manager Joe Girardi.

"I don't ever get into evaluating managers during the season," Dombrowski said. "As I've always said to people, Joe's been fine. I talk to Joe and communicate with him all the time and I'll just say this: My support of a manager is that they're managing. If I didn't support them, they wouldn't be managing.

"Joe's our manager and I'm happy to be working with him. Hey, we're all in a position that we're not happy with the way the club has played, Joe, myself, the players. We have to be better."

Seranthony was available. Alvarado too. Joe did not even have them warm up till too late. I know Norwood threw his rotation off, but he had options.

Girardi wasn't going to use Knebel on third day in a row so early in the season. That's been his policy with relievers. But he said Dominguez needed another day despite having Mon. off and throwing 11 pitches Sun. Alvarado available, too, but Girardi preferred Nelson vs. RHHs.

There's always a reason. And I don't think bullpen usage is ever managerial malpractice because I have yet to see a manager (or front office) that has any magic formula for doing it right - other than having the best pitchers. Which is the reason why Girardi had a rep for being good at bullpens to begin with.

Certainly don't remember anyone ever praising Charlie either, but the one year he had four reliable arms in four defined roles he was a genius and the others not so much.

What I don't like about Joe's "early in the season" policy is "late in the season" never arrives.

They are not going to lose 10 or 20 games in a row. Or win them. It's just gonna keep being like this. A .500-ish team that should be better but also isn't as bad as it feels like they are, and still probably has a pretty good chance to make the playoffs with just a few things clicking, a softer schedule than these first two months, and of course, the expansion. Fangraphs currently still puts them at 84 wins and a 39% chance. Braves (despite having same current record) at 87.7.

Am I wrong to think that if none of the preferred options were available to close that Brad Hand should have been saved for the 9th in a game as close as it was? Having Nick Nelson pitch the 9th felt like Girardi got to the 9th without a plan in the event they were in a position to win the game.

Couldn't Nelson have just lost the game in the 7th or 8th rather than the 8th or 9th, theoretically, whereas Hand kept them in it? Also Joe said he wanted a RHP to face those Braves' batters even if Hand would have felt like a less scary choice than Alvarado (and faced two RHBs in his 7th inning).

I definitely don't consider Joe to be a net positive for this team but it's still just one of hundreds of moves, both good and bad. Was the biggest mistake actually using (or sticking with) Nelson or was it using Knebel on Monday?

Some other pitcher could have blown it on Monday. I stick by my assessment that I was fine with him using Knebel Monday. It was a comedy of errors yesterday but no one is laughing. The misplay in the outfield should never have happened. All hands should have been ready to go in the bullpen. Meaning if sticking with Nelson - have two bodies up ready to go even if one is Knebel. All rules have exceptions, even not using pitchers on three straight days. I liked the Girardi signing, but he seems too accepting when they fail. I am sure the pitchers want to go out there and feel they are letting the team down if they don’t. Knebel’s outing on Monday was easy / few pitches if I recall - could have gone out there with backup in BP.

Over the past 5-games every bullpen pitcher appeared twice, except Familia who pitched three-times. Before last night, Norwood, Bellatti, and Nelson went three games in between apperences. Dominguez should have been available, same with Alvarado, but that is a bigger gamble.

Clearly Dominguez is still being handled with kid gloves after his long absence and TJ surgery. But it's their job to account for that too.

I am not sure about that. Using him with a 4-run lead was done with the knowledge that he would be out Tuesday. We could have used almost anyone in that situation and only warmed up Knebel if a couple of runners got on.

If the 4-run game had been Sunday and Knebel was rested and the close game had been Monday then it would have been understandable to not have Knebel available yesterday. But the close game was Sunday and we had options Monday.

Also, for everyone who thinks Morales is the solution, he has never pitched on back to back days ever. He only pitched on 1-day rest once this season and that outing was when he gave up his only run. Morales this season will be a 2-inning guy every 3 or 4 days unless they change his training radically.

This is definitely true. The Braves were only batting in the bottom of the ninth because their $16 million closer blew the save in the top of the inning.

Using him on Monday with a big lead would have been fine if Dominguez was also not going to be restricted from pitching on Tuesday. Girardi's game management decisions for the benefit of the future at the expense of the current game (and vice versa) are frequently puzzling.
