There's always a reason. And I don't think bullpen usage is ever managerial malpractice because I have yet to see a manager (or front office) that has any magic formula for doing it right - other than having the best pitchers. Which is the reason why Girardi had a rep for being good at bullpens to begin with.
Certainly don't remember anyone ever praising Charlie either, but the one year he had four reliable arms in four defined roles he was a genius and the others not so much.
What I don't like about Joe's "early in the season" policy is "late in the season" never arrives.
They are not going to lose 10 or 20 games in a row. Or win them. It's just gonna keep being like this. A .500-ish team that should be better but also isn't as bad as it feels like they are, and still probably has a pretty good chance to make the playoffs with just a few things clicking, a softer schedule than these first two months, and of course, the expansion. Fangraphs currently still puts them at 84 wins and a 39% chance. Braves (despite having same current record) at 87.7.
