I felt good about this game early on but can't say I'm optimistic at this point. I hope the Phillies can win tomorrow and split the series. I would hate to have another first game win in a 1-3 series like the Brewers at home.

Well, at least we got them to burn Cishek tonight. But a disappointing loss.

Phillies out hit the Cubs 13-8 but out LOB them, 12-4. Haprer and McCutchen with 3 hits each, Segura 2 hits and a walk and Realmuto 2 hits. Seems like that would be enough offense but clearly not tonight.

Cubs use 3 home runs to score 8.

Let's hope for a win tomorrow afternoon.

fairly early, but these last 2 weeks it shows that this team can't really compete with the Big boys yet. Brewers crushed them and the Cubs did it with productive hitting. they can compete in the weak east but after that, wow. has anyone seen the phils clean up hitter and pretty glad to see that kingery was brought back after getting one hit in his rehab games. pickings are slim these days. they never beat lester either. even with nola pitching, there is a good chance that tomorrow will not be a good day. where do they go next?

Well it doesn't get easier with a 3 game set this weekend in Milwaukee.

Probably time to get Velasquez or Pivetta back in the rotation. Irvin just is not going to fool anyone once they have film on him. Only good start was really against a mediocre team with little power (KC).

Between VV, Pivetta, and Irvin, it's close to just rearranging chairs on the Titanic.

Makes up for the first game of the series when the Cubs out hit the Phillies 11-9 but also out lob them 9-7, less extreme but I remember thinking Arrieta was getting out of a lot of jams early in that game.

Except two of them have the stuff to be better along with some track record. Irvin just has AAAA stuff and it is rare that a pitcher does well with that. If VV or Pivetta fail we make a trade or sign Keuchel at the break. We might do that anyway.

One doesn't have the stuff while two don't have the track record. Like I said....re-arranging deck chairs.

Pivetta and Velasquez both had FIPs of 3.80 or better last year. That is a track record that suggests they can be decent 4th starters at worst. They could be more consistent, but you could say that of everyone this year Nola included.

They should only be replaced if we have someone better. That is not Irvin. Eickhoff might be as good or better if he is healthy (again as good as a 4th starter), so he is getting a chance. I just see no reason to give Irvin an extended chance. I'd be more comfortable if they wanted to make him a 2-3 inning long man behind all of our right-handed starters.

As I said, I am perfectly comfortable trading for an upgrade if Pivetta and VV do not pitch well. They just deserve to pitch ahead of Irvin for now.

Yeah, VV hasn't been bad this year. He obviously is not consistent. Pivetta was reasonably consistent last year (no worse than Arrieta or Eflin really) but cratered this year.

Anyway, Irvin's gone. Drew Anderson comes up to pitch out of the pen. I reckon VV makes the next start unless they decide to bullpen him. Pivetta just had a bad AAA start no?
