The error made it tense for awhile, but in the end, another win. The throw bounced, but Harper should have had it for the out. Went off his glove.

Top of the order comes through with hits tonight. The 2 in the 8th made me relax in the ninth.

I suspect Shota would get the nod as of now.

Why? Ranger leads MLB in Wins, QS, WHIP, WAR, and has a 1.3 ERA.

Shota has a lower ERA but has pitched like 30% fewer innings than Ranger. Similar K rates.

If the AS game was next week, it's not even close.

It's very close, but I think MLB would prefer to showcase Shota's story in a high visibility exhibition. International marketing is a big thing to MLB.

Trying to remember if a Phillie pitcher has started the season 9-0. It's surprisingly hard to look up. I found Cubs' Ken Holtzman with a 9-0 record in 1967, but nothing that answers my question directly.

Ranger Suárez:

- 1st pitcher to start 9-0 with sub-1.50 ERA through 10 starts since Juan Marichal in 1966

- 1st Phillies pitcher to win 9 straight since Earl Moore in 1910

- 3rd-lowest ERA through 10 starts in franchise history - Grover Alexander in 1916 (1.24) and 1915 (1.31)

Looking at our bullpen, I think I would want Alvarez only to start an inning, he tends to put guys on base and then strike them out. His command is not great, but he is mostly unstable with the movement on the ball.

On the other hand, I really like Strahm to come in when there are guys on base. He is a fearless strike thrower.

Funny, I was just thinking Ranger vs. Wheeler. It's too bad our manager is not in charge. But I'm pretty sure Lovullo does get to make that call (he just doesn't get to pick the roster). I also think a veteran might get the edge, since it is largely ceremonial in the ASG. It will be just as exciting or marketable if Shota comes in and pitches the 3rd and 4th inning.

Alvarado. He doesn't enter games mid-inning hardly ever anymore. Hoffman was also good at that but now that he's our #1 RHP isn't called to do so as often. The question is was Strahm going to close this game if Hoffman got out of the inning or did he only warm up for the job he did.

While Alvarez has some excellent "stuff," I've personally been bothered by his delivery for a couple of years now. In my opinion, anytime your delivery causes you to fall off the mound, there's something wrong with it. However, it seems to work for Alvarez more times than it does not. I would love to see him improve his delivery, but in the meantime, I agree that he should only start innings.
