Regardless of the outcome, it had to be a good game for ESPN nationally.

That six run inning just was too much to overcome, but they almost and seemingly for a minute or so did, overcome it.

Still a tough loss but I hope the ending will inspire the Phillies and better days (and games) are ahead.

Brewers will be tough. We need some good baseball in the upcoming series.

ESPN put up a graphic describing how bad the Phillies bullpen has been lately and how flummoxed the Phillies have been going on four seasons now in terms of building a bullpen. Plain and simple, nothing seems to work for them--accomplished veterans with a recent track record of success, inexpensive young guys from the minors, journeymen. Nothing works for them.

Clearly, Alvarado was too pumped to pitch effectively tonight. It looked like he was trying to throw 110 on every pitch. Probably would have been better to not use him in this final game of the series. Even Moore might have done better. Or not.

Still crushed to have that home run called a double. I thought they had completed a remarkable come back. The replay got it right. The ball did hit that railing. So close. If these things even out over the season, we have some breaks coming.

It does seem as if the Phillies' current bullpen woes started when Bradley got hurt which seems to have had something of a domino effect. Perhaps getting him back will help.

It also seems as if a bullpen spot came down to either Kintzler or Watson as the Phillies couldn't afford to carry both at $3 million each. Unfortunately, it appears they chose the wrong guy. At what point do they possibly cut bait on Kintzler? He's probably been worse than Hale. The shame of it is that I kind of liked the sense of "to heck with what happened with this bullpen last year" bravado that Kintzler showed in ST.

I decided to wander over to fangraphs and see where our bullpen ranks in the majors. And maybe its not as bad as we think.

First thing that shocked me. Our bullpen has thrown the 4th fewest innings in MLB so far this year.

2nd. If you look at our rankings, for the most part we are in the 10-20 range of most stats. Not top 10 but not bottom 10. And LSP would be very happy to hear we rank 12th in BB/9

But there is one glaring thing we rank 29th on... HR/9. The bullpen is giving up 1.8 Homers every 9 innings.

Kintzler has given up 6 runs via HRs (and one of his non HR runs was on that stupid play last night were Villar scored., Both of Coonrod's ERs have been HRs. 5 of the 6 ERs from JoJo have been from the HR, Brogdon has had one bad outing.. where he gave up 6ERs on 2 3 run HRs. Neris has given up 3ER. 2 from HRs, And last but not least... David Hale.. 5 of the 6 runs hes given up have been from HRs.

Sooo.. is there a way to change this with coaching? Is this partly a result of the 3 batter rule? Is this partly on Girardi? (Like Brogdons 2 3R HR outing)

So far the bullpen hasnt been giving up lots of walks, they are striking out a bunch, its the HRs..
