Ranger Suarez certainly gets underrated. His stuff is probably the worst of all the pitchers in the Phillies' rotation but he knows how to pitch better than any of them. He just mixes his pitches well and never loses control. Fields his position. Moves on after giving up a home run.

Some GM might have some foresight and sign him to a 5-year deal before he gets expensive.

He was throwing consistently in the 94-95 range last night, that's a tick up from last season.
Looks like he's finally built up his arm strength.
I don't think his stuff is worse, he's like Nola, when he has pin point command he's unhittable, but he doesn't have the margin for error that Wheeler has.

The key for Suarez is his changeup, when it's working, it sets up his fastballs. He's trying to throw his slider a little more this season, but it's still a work in progress.

It is not his arm strength though. He is not throwing harder than last year and he does not throw that hard. 94 is certainly better than 92 and he can be a number 3 starter when he is throwing 94 while he is probably more of a 4/5 throwing 92.

The main point is that he knows how to pitch better than Nola and Wheeler and that is important. Nola has better stuff than he does. A little more velocity and a much better curve. But Suarez is a better pitcher because of how he pitches. Nola is not awful at pitching sense. Suarez is just better.

Coulda sworn there was talk of sending Ranger to AAA just a few starts ago.

I was never there. I was hoping the extra velocity would come back like with Wheeler, but I have always thought that Ranger at 92 is still one of our 5 best starters.

Ranger averaged 93.8 on his four seamer last year and 93.0 on his two seamer.
This year 93.9 and 92.9, but he was below that his first few starts and above that his last start.

Nola last year, 93.1 and 92.1, this year 92.6 and 92.1.
Nola's curve is better than Suarez's slider, but his change isn't as good.

Suarez's changeup is his key off speed pitch, throws it almost 25% of the time.
Last year hitters .204, this year, .294. As he sharpens his change, look for gradual improvement.

Slider is his 10% pitch.

I am not sure what quoting velocity numbers that average the exact same as last year really means? We all knew Ranger was a couple of weeks behind at the beginning of the year. We also see that the good Ranger with that velocity is not the 1 something ERA guy from last year but likely a dependable 3-4 starter with an ERA in the 3.50-4.00 range over time. That is a good pitcher.

Suarez does NOT have any key pitch. He has 4 pitches that he can command and that is what makes him good. Hitting 94 instead of 92 makes everything better, but he could probably survive and be a back end starter hitting only 92. Being able to throw 100 pitches and 6 innings consistently is a valuable skill. There is just nothing about any of his individual pitches that is special.
