Two of our hitters had HRs yesterday. Both hit RH. One has a slightly positive WAR, the other a slightly negative WAR. Why is it that the positive WAR guy always goes to the bench after a plus game, while the negative WAR guy has played every game? The positive WAR guy is young, so one would think he needs less rest. This was not a low WAR pitcher he needed protection from.

For those that missed it, Phillies struck out a Nolan Ryan’esque 18 times in this game. They actually had a crazy high BABIP with 7 hits in 16 balls in play

Seems Wheeler still did not like having to pitch on an extra day's rest, judging from the game story.

And Thomson did indeed confirm he made the line-up for the whole series at the start of the series. Personally, I'm glad we don't have a manager who thinks it matter that what a player did on Tuesday affects what he does on Wednesday, because that's just superstition anyway. I would have played Rojas instead of Schwarber myself but well, that wouldn't have worked out (and Kyle's been mashing LHP).

He says Nick is due for a day off soon.

Thomson doesn't strike me as a manager who kowtows to egos or salaries particularly, not saying it doesn't happen but the Occam's Razor explanation remains that he believes it is best for Nick to play through it and also best for the Phillies in that they don't have better options.

I think so. Castellanos has said he wants to start every game. Apparently the Phillies are allowing that. Castellanos now has 2.2 seasons in Philly and a cumulative WAR of +1.1.

But who should they play instead? Pache is hitting .118. Merrifield is worse defensively and no better offensively (I realize, you, like me, wish he wasn't on the team, just like we both wish Nick wasn't on the team. But he is). And they have to get rid of Pache before any of the other (still not-great) AAA options are even in the mix.

We can't really talk about WAR with Castellanos because we know he is poor defensively; our 3B didn't even put up more WAR than him the last two seasons. You live with that for the bat, if you get the bat. Unlike Bohm Castellanos isn't going to get better but you still need to find out if he can get back to his 2023 levels. And the only way to do that is to play him. And the team is winning so what is supposed to work better? Every team always has a few slumping guys, especially in the first half. Last year it was Turner. The year before that it was, well, Castellanos - but also every CF, and Stott was a non-factor at the plate.

For whatever reason they made a $100 million choice with Castellanos where they thought his defense was adequate and they were getting the Cincinnati version of his offense. That obviously has not happened. The real question is always who would be better than the 780 OPS/negative defensive guy they had last year. Pache is probably not better than that. Guys like Dahl and Luplow are also likely not better. 1000 OPS in AAA did not work for Jake Cave either and neither of those two is a positive player defensively anyway.

We are just not going to platoon or upgrade Castellanos unless we have something better and the question really for the deadline is whether we invest some top 10 prospects in getting something better - or just try to get Castellanos back to the 780 OPS player he was last year. I assume they will focus on the latter before investing real resources.

At least we did not go out and get Eddie Rosario.
