PPeople from the Philly area who are born into a Philly sports fan family carry their fandom wherever they move. There are lots of Philly sports fans everywhere. That’s one reason they are such a great sports town.

The Reds are basically the Phillies in 2003 or even 2013. They just don't have good ownership, money or sustainable success. If and when they start winning consistently they will draw for a while.

Not expecting more than a 3-3 road trip out west but 4-2 is certainly possible. Hopefully Anaheim is a good place for Walker to make his first start.

And it's still disappointing they didn't win yesterday though I put that more on Seranthony than the offense.

Yup - My grandmother and grandfather moved from Philadelphia to Louisville where they raised their family and their kids, grandkids, and great grandkids are now Philadelphia fans (although I admittedly like whatever team Donovan Mitchell plays for in basketball). It’s really is a thing they carried with them and passed on to the family.

The most important thing about this game was the splitter Wheeler threw in the 1st inning - absolutely filthy, with dive and fade like an elite changeup. If he can master that pitch, he'll stay elite through his contract extension.

It is interesting how, for some fanbases, devotion to one city's teams get passed down through the generations even though removed from that region. It's most pronounced with Boston teams, especially the Red Sox (Red Sox Nation) where you have people living in all corners of the country, many of whom have never been to New England are lifelong Red Sox fans. For Philadelphia, it's probably more pronounced for the Eagles as Eagles fans seem to be everywhere.

In the West and Southwest and Florida and Texas you'll still see tons of fans rooting for the team from whatever Midwestern or Eastern city they originally came from

But I also know a fair amount of parents who just end up abandoning their distant childhood team for their own kid's team, or even for themselves. Although it's easier than ever to just keep following your fave team (both in terms of watching games and media in general).

And of course kids can have whatever favorite team they want now. Or just favorite players. For me the Phillies were it, the team you saw in person, the team you saw on TV, the team on the radio. Then cable created some Braves and Cubs fans. And the Yankees were the Yankees.

I don't quite know what it is about the Sox. I spent literally one year in Boston (fifty years ago!), I've been in Fenway three times...and when they're not on the field opposing the Phils, I still root for the Sox. I pull for the Bruins, too (and I'm indifferent about the Flyers, interestingly enough), to the extent I pay attention to the NHL.

I don't quite know what it is about the Sox.

I've always seen them as the main counter to the Yankees in the AL East and, like the Phillies and Philadelphia A's, the victims of poor owners who resorted to selling stars and grossly under-spending in the bad old days. Growing up in Allentown, there were far too many Yankees front-runner fans, so I liked the BoSox.

I like the Boston teams, too, having lived here for three quarters of my life. But I still prefer the Philly teams in every sport. I wondered whether I would ever change, but about 20 years ago, there was a Phillies-Red Sox game on Labor Day. The Phillies were already out of it (something that was familiar to me), but the Sox were trying to make the playoffs. I still count bring myself to root for the Sox. So that settled it.

I guess when it comes down to it, I'm just a loyal person. I've had the same employer and the same wife for 37 years.

My sons, though, favor Boston teams. They like the Philly teams, but like me, only when it doesn't interfere with the Boston teams. Only one of the three lives in New England, but they're loyal, too. My oldest lives in Wrigleyville and likes the Dubs, but he says, as the song goes, "Boston, you're my home." My youngest lives in New York, and he doesn't like the local teams, of course.
