Not great bullpen work, but let's be honest -- the offense produced 1 run in the regulation 9 innings. If they are able to score a measly 2 runs, we win this game. The pitching was plenty good enough to win and nice to see a good game from Nola.

That’s the other aspect that is really bubbling under my skin- I’m willing to accept that the offense is short handed, but it should not be as awful as this. The really infuriating part is that they go flat if they get behind early, or the day after these awful 9th and extra inning losses.

I don’t see this as a manager problem, this is becoming a character problem.

Funny how the story just yesterday was that the anger at the Mets and the emotion of the win would be an energy surge.

I'm not usually one to second-guess the manager but the bullpen was actually good, and so was Neris for the most part...until he went back out there. Of course we'd also call Gabe stupid if he'd put in Ramos sooner (or Nicasio, or De Los Santos because then everyone would be like, "why put him in that position in his first game?")

I do not think energy or character have anything to do with it. They had tons of character two weeks ago...and just last night. These guys are gonna hit again.

Firing the hitting coach has never worked either that I can recall. He was also a genius two weeks ago! It is pretty interesting, as andyb has pointed out, how much the line-up might need its two free swingers though.

Those are good responses. And I'm glad to hear Harper shouldering some of the blame.

I'm outside the country so its hard for me to gain a sense of clubhouse atmosphere.

To me it’s timing. The team was all hitting the first two weeks, now they are all slumping. Replacements for Segura and Herrera are steep downgrades. When everyone slumps The big guys press.

And McCutchen is playing through an injury probably. No question, it's still Harper and Hoskins' job to come through (and Cutch and Realmuto have).

The luxury of having Franco in that 8-spot can't be underestimated either. His numbers have plummeted (.668 OPS in last 7 days, .275 OBP in last 14 days) and he's back to being a negative WAR player. Throw in the same from Cesar (.684 OPS in last 14 days) and you only have half a line-up. And Harper's been even worse than those two guys!

Long term this organization will be better if Kingery wins the 2B job (assuming his defense is better than Cesar's) and finding a 3B that plays better defense. If we had drafted Senzel we'd have an interesting second half discussion though Senzel seems to be following the Roman Quinn development path at the moment.
