What stood out with Velasquez was his FB was untouchable the first time through the order, but pounded the second time. Which just illustrates what I've been say, even a 95-96 FB is no longer a sure out pitch in today's ML, without a full portfolio of pitches, velocity has much less value than say a decade ago.
Velasquez has flashed a nice two seamer but he needs to locate it better, but it can be a good balance to his 4 seamer. He flashes a curve and changeup, but again, needs to be more consistent throwing them for strikes.
Like Pivetta, a work in progress, they've definitely taken a step forward this year, but I wouldn't expect too much too soon. All you have to do is watch Nola paint the plate with his 92-93 FB to see the difference between a pitcher and a thrower.
