Kingery was almost half way to third when the shortstop stopped the ball in front of him. Hoskins held third and Kingery got back to second as throw to first was late. Mercer dove for the ball and smothered it. It actually bounced off the ground and up to hit him in the forehead which was about a foot off the ground. He made a nice recovery to try to get the out at first, but didn't make it in time.

I think the chance for a save overrides all thinking by managers. The one rule that cannot be disregarded is that the closer always has to have the chance for the save.
