I know it is very early in the season, but doesn't this feel familiar? With the almost total rebuild of the bullpen, I had hopes that we would not be blowing nice leads like we routinely did in 2020. I still have hopes that this is a small and temporary blip on the road to a fine season.

But tonight, not good.

yes and no. IMO this was on the manager. Brogdon was obviously off. Even before the 1st 3 run HR, T-Mac and Ben Davis were talking about Brogdon not having a feel for the change up and that it seemed his arm slot was off. Brogdon had been perfect up to this point, so eventually there was going to be a bad outing.

If Girardi had gotten him after the first 3 run HR maybe no more runs score. Then Hoskins HR in the 9th ties it.

So the more I think about it, Girardi should get some heat for last night.

He could have pulled Brogdon before the first 3 run homer when it was obvious he had no feel for his Changeup and just didn’t have it. He should have pulled him after he gave up the 3 run homer. He undoubtedly should have pulled him after he gave up 2 more hits after the first three run homer.

Almost like he was managing to lose.

Clearly he was slow to react. I was not watching but when did he get a reliever up to warm up. If he did not have someone warming after the first home run that would be malpractice. Hard to say if he should have done so after the first two batters. Brogdon had been good so far this year and the plan I am sure was for him to throw the whole inning.

One can't keep all the higher leverage relievers warm all the time. That extra throwing takes a toll. Of course there is just no way he should have been in the game for the second home run. That seems like a manager wanting to stick to a plan of saving half of his relievers for tomorrow. He did achieve that, though I guess the question is whether someone like Kintzler should have been in before the game was lost and it was OK to use Rosso. What would we have said if Rosso came in after the first 2 batters or even the home run in a 7-6 game? We might have been grumbling a bit about that.

I can’t just assume that other relievers wouldn’t have given up runs as well, coming in with men on base.
