The Phillies sent a car at noon for Ricardo Pinto, who was in Rochester, N.Y. with the IronPigs. He got stuck in traffic and did not arrive until the fourth inning. He said hello to Rob Thomson, then went to the bullpen. He pitched four innings for the save.

It is really too bad that his ERA suffered by going to a 4th inning he really wasn't stretched out for, though I assume his teammates appreciated it and he did get the save. Pinto is interesting with the splitter if he can command it consistently. Not sure his stuff is good enough for more than middle relief, but he is an interesting alternative to Covey and Nelson if it comes to that.

Great job by Pinto. That splitter, if he can throw it consistently, will keep him in the majors, it's filthy, basically a changeup with a sharper dip and some horizontal movement away from LH hitters.

Interesting contrast, 7 years ago, 4 seamer averaged 95.7, but hitters hit .413 against it, .381 against his 95 MPH 2 seamer, but .175 against his changeup.

Last night, 2 seamer averaged 91.8. But the splitter made it look faster. Curve was a "show me" pitch.

Shows you that velocity is a bit overrated, it's the portfolio of pitches and how you command them that matters most.

Turnbull averaged 91.7 on his cutter, but has been consistent at 93+ the last few years, so he should get a little more velo as he builds up arm strength. Been primarily a cutter/sllider/2-seamer, but last night threw more curves (10) than 2-seamers (9). Also has a change he uses as a "show me" pitch.

Turnbull had a great game yesterday and it's plenty welcome. Strong outing. Never felt real confident about him, but he's surely earned another start.

Pinto channeling Bruce Sutter. About time the Phils got lucky finding a player. Hadn'ta been for wet infield, his stats might be even better than they are.

Can't stand baseball in the rain. It's just awful to play in and dangerous, IMHO. Dislike watching it too. So here's to the real fans that showed up to freeze their buns off in the rain yesterday who got rewarded with the Bryce Harper show. Lucky you guys.
