Exactly.
My reaction to LSP's post was "here we go again." In 1993, the Phillies struck out 1,049 times (five strikeouts behind the NL leader Marlins). They led the league in runs scored. Fans moaned about the strikeouts.
Patient teams strike out a lot... and they tend to score a lot of runs. They wear out starting pitchers, get deep into opponents' bullpens, and have big innings. And they strike out a lot.
Yeah, it would be nice to have a bunch of hitters who rarely strike out, but still somehow manage to lead the league in pitches seen, and still produce high OBP and lots of runs. There are occasional hitters who can do this, but whole lineups?
Focusing on strikeouts as a "problem" - at least with hitters whose strikeouts are a result of working deep counts on a consistent basis - is just wrong. Teams that score lots and lots of runs tend to strike out a lot. Teams that have a bunch of slap-hitting contact hitters... tend not to win.
