There's always some spin and politics (and roster math, and $) involved, but I think their stated position is that Moniak actually looked like a better player than Herrera in Allentown. Of course Quinn also locked down his spot by looking like the best hitter in Clearwater.

Quinn's at bats have gotten a little bit better the last couple of games. Hitting 8th is not helping him as he probably needs to be more aggressive there (i.e. why walk with the pitcher coming up and 2 outs). Not expecting much, but there is no reason he will not give us something close to his career norms going forward.

I agree they are trying to muddle through the early weeks and hope something works. I just don't think it is impossible they will add Herrera (or some other left-handed bat) since they have the 40-man roster spot open.

The time to add Herrera might be this Friday at the start of a road trip in a hitter friendly park with a 8:40 pm start time.

This is not good news. I thought all the coaches were wearing masks. Much more so than the players. Will it spread to the players!! I sure hope not.

I think this is mostly contact tracing. Who knows if it spreads. I think much of the team just got their first vaccine shot, but they are obviously still in the window where it is dangerous. Girardi just got his second shot I believe. Not sure if getting vaccinated changes any of the contact tracing rules yet. Probably not for a few weeks at any rate.

No rule changes unless they hit 85%, and fully vaxxed. Some teams have done it.

Masks are still not perfect, and also do more to protect other people than you. So if you're a 1B coach standing next to dozens of unmasked players (as well as the opposing 1B) you're not fully protected. And it's still got to be pretty easy to slip in the clubhouse or travelling.

But this could also just be one person who caught it at home and had contact with others. The names involved suggest it happened away from the ballpark (or at least the field) since none of the bullpen or pitching coaches are out.

I know about that 85% and "rules", but the stories around that seemed to talk more about team behavior. Teams at 85%+ could be together more without masks in the clubhouse, etc. But does that apply to contact tracing around a positive test? I bet it is a gray area in the rules being written and overwritten on a daily basis.

And for those in a fantasy league, what does one do with 6 or 7 players on the IL and only 3 IL slots?

Well, they said Moore could still make his start Friday, so the contact tracing rules aren't that stringent to begin with, assuming negative tests. Perhaps at 85% they don't even bother isolating or testing anyone in the vaccinated cohort.

Shots should be available to get the players vaccinated now, but I understand there is a fairly large number of MLB players are reluctant to get the vaccine.

I know that last week in Dallas, they had next day and even walk in spots available to receive COVID vaccinations. Every adult is eligible. Tarrant County (Fort Worth and Arlington) exhausted their 880,000 wait list more than a week ago. I have six grandchildren who have gotten their first shots and are awaiting their second. Four in Texas and two in New York.

In the past several days, I am seeing PSA ads on TV urging everyone to get vaccinated. Shots are available and every team should be able to be fully vaccinated by mid-May at the latest IF the players will accept the vaccine.

I wonder if guys are also going on the COVID IL for vaccination symptoms. I would think some players may almost have to - even though it would be somewhat self-evident that fevers/chills/aches etc. were because of the vaccine, no way to know for sure if you're going to be in a group setting, or travelling.

Yeah, it was the Yankees' Urshela, thanks for the reminder. I just wonder if it's mandatory. i.e. most of these guys are probably going to try and play through it if they just feel a little under the weather. I can also understand not wanting to rush and get the second shot if you think it's going to cause you to have 2-3 bad games. Don't agree with it, but understand.

I had those symptoms afte my first shot. Also a small cough on morning of shot. Big cough by three days later. Turns Out I had shot and Covid19
