The impact of the WBC to the Phillies was mentioned during today's broadcast. I looked up some stats, and hitters who were hot during the WBC have started out cold during the first 2 weeks of regular season games; a comparison of stats for 3 key Phillies hitters:
- Trea Turner (1.455 OPS in WBC; .771 OPS in MLB)
- JT Realmuto (1.200 OPS in WBC; .596 OPS in MLB)
- Kyle Schwarber (1.093 OPS in WBC; .739 OPS in MLB)
As for pitchers, Ranger Suarez got hurt during the WBC, but of course that could have happened in Spring training games too. Here is a comparison of stats for 2 Phillies pitchers who were in the WBC:
- Tijuan Walker (4 IP with 8 Ks and 0.500 WHIP in WBC; 9 IP with 10 Ks and 1.67 WHIP in MLB)
- Jose Alvarado (3 IP with 5 Ks and 1.33 WHIP in WBC; 5.1 IP with 13 Ks and 0.56 WHIP in MLB)
Alvarado is the only Phillies player who participated in the WBC who appears to have gotten off to a decent start during the first 2 weeks of the season.
