I don't think they were really afraid of losing him. It's just that nobody was clearly better. He wouldn't have made the team in the first place if not for the injury to Walker (and even Covey) and Kerkering. Now, of course, it's easy to say they should have just added Bellatti back, or called up just about anyone. And even easier to say they could have used some higher-leverage arms in that higher-leverage spot. But I do think most managers don't try to win every game at this time of year. It was an acid-test for him. Now they can't even keep him until Kerkering's eligible.

I don't think the Reds are a terrible team. Possibly a good one.

they already have an open 40 man spot and Brogdon will open up another. you can't put anyone on the 60 until it's full (and probably a little early to say those two guys will be out that long, even backdated).

I certainly expect the Phillies to have a good season, but tonight, they were the terrible team. Actually, the pitching was pretty good until they put Brogdon in for the tenth. As noted already, this game should have been won and should not have gone into extra innings.

Brogdon only gave up the one hit in the tenth. His inability to not give up walks killed him tonight and killed the Phillies chances.

With a bullpen game wednesday they have two different things to think about. but plenty of choices.

Guessing they'll just go get Mercado for tomorrow. He pitched 2 innings in his first game so he could actually give them 2 tomorrow if they need it. Nelson did not pitch much but he is probably only good for 1 tomorrow and guessing Turnbull is only going 3 or 4.

Kerkering will be back in a week (4/9) so no need to get someone off the 40 yet who might have to be DFA'd on the way down. Ruiz and Bellatti are both out of options.

BTW bullpen game is tomorrow. Wheeler on regular rest is not until Wednesday.

Yup, mistyped. But agree Nelson is probably available. And Turnbull could go five, he just has to pitch well enough to do to.

Didn't realize Ruiz was out of options, but Ortiz isn't, and he was technically taking Kerkering's spot so they could just plan on him not coming back if they did want to add someone w/o options. 4/9 seems pretty far away. Marte also has options of course. There's just not anyone to flip-flop with once they (presumably) call up Mercado.

Rain also a complicating factor, you can't assume Wheeler will have a clean uninterrupted start on Wednesday. Both teams have Thursday off and Phillies aren't travelling far (Reds heading home) so I assume the game will be played when it can be played, on Wednesday.

Really disappointed for Sanchez, who showed everybody again that he can start. Had confidence in Hoffman and still do - bad time to have a bad outing.

More anemic hitting from the stars lost this game. Shoulda never gotten to Brogdon. Hopefully the Phils will give some other reliever a shot after that performance.

Interesting note from Gelb. Last I looked it seemed like it would be playable tonight.

*It’s unfair to suggest the Phillies lost 6-3 to the Cincinnati Reds because of Brogdon. The Phillies scored two runs in the first inning, then none in the next eight. Johan Rojas pinch-ran for Kyle Schwarber in the eighth inning and was promptly picked off. Rob Thomson aggressively managed his bullpen, expecting a rainout Tuesday, but that left him with only Brogdon or Nick Nelson for the 10th inning.

It all comes crashing down for Connor Brogdon, a reliever the Phillies once...

Weather looks really bad till Thursday. But assume they need to be ready for a 5-hour ordeal tonight.

Right but the note suggested just the opposite, that with Seranthony and Soto unavailable Thomson didn't mind emptying the bullpen and not saving a better arm for the possible 10th because the thought was already that there would be no game at all today.

Of course, typically managers don't like to save arms for extras in any case. And the story also discusses the more general point of not overtaxing your starters or your best relievers this early.

If they do call it today will they schedule a doubleheader? Forecast not much more forgiving tomorrow as you note.

Guess we'll have a transaction/line-up in an hour or two in any case.
