Random thought of the day: Michael Saunders seems so long ago

I did not see this in the game thread, but I was down at the game today. Always one of my favorite games of the year, even when the Phils are bad -- everyone is very positive. Mackanin came out to give the line-up card, a few people started cheering (I was among them) and then the players came out and gave him an ovation. When he came back from the line-up card exchange he got a terrific ovation. Obviously Pete did not have the career Andy Reid did, but the endings were similar in how well they were handled. Nice tribute.

Mackanin's history with the team is kind of funny/forgotten. He was not there in '08, and was not exactly considered a great bench coach compared to Jimy Williams (who Gillick had probably brought in as Charlie insurance, both in the dugout and as a possible replacement.Then they wouldn't give Williams a raise, something that also happened later with Lopes).

And then they dumped Mackanin for that year when there was no bench coach at all (since Sandberg was added) only to rehire him for Sandberg's staff (as 3B coach since Ryne wanted Bowa as his bench coach).

Anyway, Dale Sveum got a ring when the Cubs won the World Series and hopefully that is Pete's fate as well.

Since Mackanin is staying in the organization, he really isn't leaving. I am pleased that he has been retained and hope that he will contribute to the organization continuing to progress and move forward. That said, I believe making a change in manager is the right thing to do at this time. I hope the new hire turns out to be a good fit and has great success.

Ending the season with an 11-0 beat down of the Mets has to make Phillies phans feel good.

A two hit combined shutout coupled with an 11 hit (and 7 walk) day for the offense that produced 11 runs is about as good as we can expect.

I especially liked the bullpen coming on for 4 shutout innings (from 3 pitchers) with NO hits, NO walks.

Good vibes to last until spring training. Bring on the hot stove.
