I think you can put the Bay Area in that second group too, especially now that the 49ers are closer to the Sharks than Giants (let alone the Warriors). But Phoenix, Miami (as you note) and Dallas all have teams which aren't in the actual city.

Despite the stadium being across state lines the Giants still count in my book. The Pats don't play in Boston (or have "Boston" in their name). The Redskins are long-gone from DC proper. And the suburban stadiums in Texas and Arizona are much further away from their cities than E. Rutherford is from Madison Square Garden.

For me it's less about geography or municipalities than fan experience - if you are a NY or Philly sports fan (of a certain age) you have now seen all four of your teams win a championship (regardless of which football or baseball team you root for in NY).

To me, it's just a label then. As you point out, the Pats don't play in Boston, so I'd remove Boston from my list, to be consistent.

Well like I said for me it's not about where you vote or pay taxes, just which teams you root for (and can see in person). And Arlington is no more Dallas than E. Rutherford is Manhattan, even if they have the same governor.

Of course the entire experience of supporting a team has changed in our lifetime. You can follow any team you want. Teams move more than ever (so that Raiders Super Bowl probably doesn't mean a whole lot to most of the current Dodgers fan base). Some people - including here - root for diffferent teams from different cities. Others ditch the team they grew up with for the team where they now live (especially if their kids root for that team). I also find that baseball fans, in particular, don't follow the other sports as much (understandable both stylistically and in terms of just, free time).

I'm originally from Philly, grew up a huge Phillies and baseball fan. I didn't really get into NFL until my mid-20's and even now baseball is my favorite.

Living in NY in Rockland County, my kids are Phillies and Eagles fans. I imparted that to them and I wouldn't want it any other way.

That's how it should be IMO. But I grew up in the Lehigh Valley, in the early '70s the Phillies were closer and on TV more. Now it would be more of a toss-up for the NY teams (and it's easier, or at least just as easy, to get to Manhattan than the Sports Complex). One of my stepsisters is a huge Giants fan and her second-favorite team is whoever Durant plays for. My youngest sister had a boyfriend who liked the Cowboys and she stuck with that. I remember as a kid being a fan of Brooks Robinson because I read books and articles about him, and I had a thing for the ABA San Antonio Spurs, but we didn't really get to watch other teams or players that much (let alone every day). I have supported a lot of teams living in other places including the '99 Dallas Stars and the Astros (had season tix for both the Stars and for Houston's AA team at the time) but they never ever feel like "mine."

What a great quote from Foles !!! Very inspiring and it is exactly what the Eagles did to the Pats. Thye had the courage to go for it and not stop themselves by punting or going for the filed goal. Instead, the Eagles said, "Here we come, let's see if you can stop us". That is an attitude the Belichek and Brady have used against the rest of the league for years. And I think in some ways they were stunned that someone took that attitude toward them.
