Davey Johnson dies at 82: MLB manager led Mets to 1986 World Series title

Was a Phillie in 1977 and early 1978. Played a valuable bench role in the former of the two seasons.

A highly successful manager who simply won everywhere he went but seemed to be somewhat abrasive and, notwithstanding the Mets, seemed to wear out his welcome with the clubhouse in all of his stops after two or three years. In that HOF grey area as a manager--he only has one WS appearance but otherwise has at least one WC and over 1200 wins.

I liked that Rolaid’s or Tum’s commercial he did back in the day. Announcer says something about the leadoff batter either striking out or popping up the 1st pitch and it shows Davey and he’s groaning

Got to admit, even though he was 89, this one is kind of a shock. He always seemed the picture of fitness and health.

Yeah, agreed. He'd stopped making an appearance at Sundance but since that festival didn't happen in '21 or '22 it wasn't as noticeable. Also hadn't really acted since before the pandemic, save the recent TV cameo mentioned.

A big loss, Sundance alone is an amazing achievement, but a terrific actor, director and person too

Sonny Curtis, who was in the Crickets, both before and after Buddy Holly passed, songwriter of such classics as "I Fought the Law (and the Law Won)", "Walk Right Back" and "More Than I Can Say", and the Mary Tyler Moore theme song, "Love is All Around" which he also sung.
