I'll certainly second this. From his earliest works (The Johnstown Flood, The Great Bridge) through his recent books, always enjoyable, always illuminating. He was a master; the only other recent chroniclers of American history I might consider in his class are Tuchman and Ambrose.
For those who may not have discovered these writers... try them.
