He only barely worked across lines. However, he had a developmentally disabled child or grandchild. He was a supporter of programs for developmentally disabled and sponsored the act which created a program for planning and advocacy in every state. I always saw him as a prime example that people can be empathetic when they walk in someone else’s shoes.

Yes that struck me as a hilarious framing but compared to the last 20 years, probably correct. But if you asked me what he was best known for my first two answers would be his assocation with big pharma/nutritional supplements and his music (and also being the subject of a Frank Zappa song).

Norman Mineta, detained as a Japanese-American during WWII and later mayor of San Jose, Congressperson and cabinet secretary in both the Clinton and Bush 2 administrations, in the latter administration he oversaw the creation of the TSA after 9/11.
