Italy has way more than 12,000 cases. The estimate is 80% of cases are undetected. That would put the true case fatality rate at 800/60,000, a bit over 1%. And the case fatality rate will go down as we get more experience with treatment.

Isn't that actually worse? if you have that many people walking around spreading a disease with little known, I think you need to take steps until there is an understanding. When entities like the NBA and the NCAA take steps that will cause them immense amounts of money, we may want to give that some weight...all of a sudden we seem to have a bunch of amateur disease specialists all over the TV and social media.

To play devil's advocate, if you have that many people walking around, feeling fine, then doesn't that indicate the disease is relatively harmless?

I think its too early to say there has been a reduction in infections in Italy. They put their lockdown in place two days ago. Since then deaths have continued to increase. They likely don't have the capacity to test as much as they need to be doing and they still had over 2,000 new cases yesterday. That is the most they have confirmed in a single day. They also had 196 deaths yesterday.

Countries like South Korea, China and Singapore are the ones seeing slower infection rates, I don't think the western world is ready for the same sort of personal actions that are being taken in these countries, or the full quarantine put in place in regions in China.

They have not turned the corner. They had their highest number of new infections yesterday. They also had the highest amount of deaths in any country in a single day yesterday. Higher than any single day in China.

and think about the teams they've played in the last week. Then think about the players/families and staff of those teams and then those they interacted with. So essentially one of the most effective ways to spread this all over the country is by sports.

I had not seen the reduction in infection rate that bkeitch had claimed, but highest number of new cases does not preclude a reduction in infection RATE, the rate being based on the number of known or extrapolated existing cases as a percentage.

What other evidence do we have for infection rate other than confirmed cases? If someone has evidence of a decrease I'd love to see it but I have not seen a reference to it anywhere online and I've been following this pretty closely as it is so close to us.

I think the NCAA March Madness tournament will have to be cancelled. The AAC, SEC and Big Ten Tournaments have all been cancelled. Other conferences are also cancelling. With the NBA - a professional, for-profit league - having cancelled, I don't see how an amateur, student/athlete driven league can not cancel.

I saw the lower rate of infections in Italy in one (I considered credible) article saying that they had 3 days in a row that the number of infections had gone down. South Korea has had 4 days per this article.

Take it as a single article and maybe I spoke too soon.

How are they able to release names of players infected? Isn't that a HIPAA violation?

The Jazz statements I have seen did not identify Mitchell, just "one additional player tested positive." The reports in the media seem to all say "league officials" or "people familiar with the situation," so I imagine it is just a free press issue re: HIPAA. If the media chooses not to voluntarily restrict publishing the names, than they are published.

Hockey is finished. MLB about to be cancelled too. Also the League of Ireland postponed until at least the end of March. That won't affect anyone else here but theres a good chance if this drags out the League of Ireland never comes back. Clubs don't have the cash reserves to survive a long period without gate receipts. Same is likely true for Indy league clubs in the US and any number of small businesses.

Duke has suspended all athletics indefinitely. If there is an NCAA tournament, one of the top teams in the country will not take part in it.

The Champions League and Europa League are about to be suspended indefinitely. At this point the Premier League, Bundesliga and Ligue 1 are the only major hold outs on this side of the water.
