Announcers discussing Strahm and Hoffman's All-Star chances. At The Athletic Tyler Kepner (a Philly guy) left both of them off. Just too many guys to fit in (he still had both Wheeler and Suarez going). And presumably a guy or two with bigger save numbers ahead of them, right or wrong.

Four Phillies pitchers - Jeff Hoffman, Matt Strahm, Ranger Suárez and Zack Wheeler - have been named to the National League All-Star squad and will join starters Alec Bohm, Trea Turner and Bryce Harper at this year's Midsummer Classic at Globe Life Field on July 16.

If Ranger is dealing with a dead arm period.. would prefer he not pitch. Would give him like 7-9 days off depending on how the Phillies set up the rotation after the break.

What a story Hoffman is. The board groaned when he was brought up last year.. And now hes an all-star.

I am pleasantly surprised! As per previous post but I didn't figure more than one reliever.

I would think even if Ranger really is fatigued or dead arm they would still want him to have a throwing schedule. An inning in the all-star game probably won't be high stress. I doubt both he and Wheeler will pitch and Wheeler seems more likely at this point.

Wheeler scheduled to start Sunday. Usually starters that start on Sunday dont pitch in the game

Well, Ranger will be on normal rest then.

If Ranger pitches, it will only be an inning, and then at least five days rest

I imagine any Phillies pitcher (Wheeler or Suarez) that pitches an inning will be 4th or 5th in the rotation after the break to give them more rest. That inning really does not bother me. Ranger has been working for this his entire life. He deserves this.

For sure. Unless he actually gets pulled from his next start early with demonstrable fatigue or soreness, he goes and he pitches, unless the manager doesn't use him.

Well, that's cool. I didn't realize they still had the different aspects of the process.

Matt Strahm and Jeff Hoffman, who have formed one of the best bullpen duos in baseball, were voted into the game via the player ballot. Neither is a traditional closer. It was a satisfying feeling for both pitchers, who are first-time All-Stars.

“The way the game’s going,” Strahm said, “I think guys are starting to see that you win ballgames not only in the ninth inning. So it’s good to see. It’s good for the game.”

Ranger Suárez, who ranks second in the National League in ERA, is a candidate to start the midsummer classic. The Phillies believe he could use a break to manage a mounting workload, but they will defer to Suárez’s wishes.

“If I’m going, I want to pitch,” Suárez said. “I mean, it’s my first All-Star Game. I want to have that feeling of my first All-Star appearance.”

“I want him to do what he wants to do,” Thomson said. “I’m pretty comfortable with it.”

Zack Wheeler is not eligible to pitch; he will start on the final day before the All-Star break. Harper said he intends to play in the All-Star Game. “For sure,” Harper said. It’ll be the first time Harper appears in an All-Star Game as a Phillie.

That was on June 1 - five weeks and five starts ago. But there's no doubt that, followed by the trip to London is where the roots of it might be.

Skenes to start for NL. I felt this was going to happen after his 7 no-hit innings the other day. Less pressure on Ranger I guess, though Ranger is not the kind of guy to overdo it under pressure anyway.
