I don't think they would have given Embiid the extension is there was any question about his knees. I think they are just being really conservative with him.

Well, they could still easily be wrong! Also, the way things have played out there is no reason to think they had a clue what sort of shape he was in. The extension was signed on September 20, camp didn't start until September 30. It's not like a trade or free agent signings with an unfamiliar player where you run fresh medicals. And the extension technically only added one year to the deal he already had (if you assume he was going to pick up his option which he would have) so it wasn't much of a burden to give it to him.

I doubt the worst/Bynum case is actually so, but they still gave him the extension/raise knowing they would not be getting a full-time or fully healthy player most seasons, because it was of little consequence to begin with. It was a cap management move more than anything.

Another bad shooting night. We either are in a prolonged slump or we are getting bad shots since we are not creating enough open looks. I wonder if Nurse is irritated with our approach. He really hates to lose.

Well, he is the coach and not a random bystander. He can actually do his job which would be refreshing to see.

I would think Nurse has brought some of his Kawhi experience to bear on the Joel situation as far as future rest and not playing back-to-backs, but he seems as puzzled as we are about what's actually been going on up to this point.

But also hard to expect much for the moment. They were always going to be finding themselves as a team for the first month; hard to do that with two of your three best players missing. Or rather, it can be done, but it will take longer and look uglier.

Joel has been arrested for either punching or shoving a journalist in the locker room. My guess is it's Marcus Hayes for that hatchet job he wrote last week.
Violence is never the right solution, but also... he maybe had it coming a little bit?

Wow. Joel called him out on Friday for not showing up, which I was surprised to read (i.e. Hayes is terrible but he's usually around, and especially with the Sixers).

But I wouldn't say he had it coming and even if he did, you can't do that. Just makes Joel and the Sixers look exactly like the mess Hayes thinks they are.

Violence is (almost) never the answer, that is true. These are words and words should not result in violence, but I will be honest, I don’t think it is crazy if lines are crossed.

Mentioning someone’s dead brother or son is probably over that line. If someone were to threaten my wife or say certain things about my sisters I am not sure I would try to hold my temper. I realize I should, but to me there are lines.

Embiid is a public figure, so he does need to expect some comments that you or I would not need to expect, so I do think he should walk away, but I don’t really know what was said. There is a line in my opinion, even for a public figure.

I am however smart enough not to say something like that to a 7’ 265lb guy. This guy is pretty lucky all he got was pushed.

I think Joel has chosen to make his family a big part of his public story. I don't think it's over the line to talk about it. But when you have the rhetorical style Hayes has - which, let's face it is really just Stephen A. Smith or Skip Bayless light - it is going to feel over the line to do so. And, tellingly, the editors of the Inquirer seem to have already agreed it was, or Hayes had second thoughts (he did supposedly try to apologize during this incident).

I don’t know why Marcus Hayes has kept his job all these years. He’s never even been knowledgable about the sports when he covered them.

Sixers up 5 with less than two minutes to go find a way to lose.

This is not a playoff team without Embiid. I am concerned that if he only plays 30 games as I am guessing they are shooting for they will be in the play in (or not even that) and the path is just too long from there.

Crazy as it sounds, they need another player to get them to the playoffs. They need some type of scorer that create his own shot, Maxey simply can’t do it all. He might end up leading the league in scoring at this rate, he is certainly going to lead the league in missed shots. Looks like memories of Lloyd “World B” Free. He is 6th in the league in scoring at the moment, but easily leads the league in shots (by 1.5 per game over 2nd). Shooting an anemic 38.5% from the field, not his fault, it is hard to score 1v5.

Hard to believe the only team worse than them in the East is Milwaukee. Their only win is….the Sixers.

They'll be busy trading either way, whether it's early (after all the off-season signings can be traded) or at the deadline.

I guess I should be clearer in that statement. They want to hold him out of many games, he will also be hurt and just get rested. Between those two factors I don’t see him playing more than 30 games.

Even now, when he does come back, he hasn’t played in a long, long time at this point, he can’t be thrown out there for 35 minutes for awhile. It is going to be play a game, sit a game (or limit minutes so badly that it is essentially that). If Embiid is on the court for even 1/3 of the minutes this season I will be surprised. (And obviously if he only plays 30 of 82 games he won’t be).

I am not getting down on Embiid or joining the silly “he is getting paid, he should play” crowd. Quite the opposite actually, I kinda like this plan, we KNOW that if there is no load management by the time the playoffs roll around he is not the dominant player we need. Let’s try this. No point in repeating the same “will never work” plan.

My point is just, we need a “filler” that can score. Poor Maxey is out there running a 1v5 offense. He has a perpetual smile on his face, but honestly can he possibly be happy at the moment?
