It was always kind of bad trade if not a terrible trade especially once Segura moved to 2B (also forcing them to sign Didi). But who knows if they even would have drafted Stott that year had Crawford nailed down the job. The malpractice was before the trade: moving him around (even for Galvis that first year), favoring Kingery, and the bad luck of his injuries. Plus the Hoskins/Santana era that was part of what led to the trade too.
I'd also say the Kingery contract and hiring Chris Young, and probably Girardi too, were bigger mistakes. Just not ones that linger the same way.
Kind of ironic too that Santana's contract was something the team couldn't carry and Hoskins' play in LF was unacceptable when the current regime has willingly repeated both those things
