2023 Phillies Minor League Spring Training/Opening Roster Assignments

On Clearwater I really would have loved to see Rincones pushed to Jersey Shore where he probably belongs. Assume they just want to see him at Low A since he did not debut last year. There is a real playing time crunch in the outfield at Clearwater even without Yhoswar Garcia there. Crawford, Viars, and Boyd all need to play every day and even Cade Fergus should get regular at bats because he has some tools.

Just Bradenton and St Lucie. That’s just 3 series all season. They do start in Bradenton though.

Any idea what happened to Rickardo Perez and his suspension? He had a nice year at FCL last year and would seemingly have been in line to play at Clearwater at age 19.

Not a clue. I haven't been able to find any explanation. Minor leagues tend to keep these things private; there are always a couple of minor leaguers on the Suspended or Restricted lists, and rarely any explanation.

Currently:

Chris Cornelius (Reading - Restricted). Has been on the Restricted List since March of last year (2022).

Konnor Ash (Clearwater - Restricted). In this case, we know why, because of public reports of his involvement in a DUI in Florida.

Jake McKenna (FCL - Restricted). Jake's been on the Restricted List since last July. Don't know why.

Rickardo Perez (FCL - Suspended). Added to Suspended List on March 15th. The roster listing suggests it's for (unpublic) number of days. No public explanation.

Joalbert Angulo (DSL White - Restricted). On the Restricted List since last July.

Jesus Polanco (DSL White - Restricted). Added to the Restricted List on February 14th.

I believe Cornelius stepped away and is in sort of a Retired with a place to come back to. David Parkinson was in the same spot last year and is now back.

I had heard McKenna was coming back, but nothing since then. I don't know all of the circumstances, but he was really close with Corey Phelan.

Per Steve Potter, Jake McKenna is back at the complex, but is still on the Restricted List.

The Phillies domestic reserve list is also at 180 right now just in case you are wondering why Painter went to the 60 day IL and why guys like Bergolla are not stateside right now.

Matt, I can only identify 169 players on the DRL (excluding the 11 players on the minor-league 60-day IL). Do you have a tracking sheet available that can fill me in?

I would guess that McKenna won't come off the Restricted List until the FCL roster is set; that needn't happen until their season starts.

Thanks, Matt. I had excluded 40-man players on optional assignment from the Domestic Reserve List. (Had to go back and re-read the relevant section of the MLB Rules for 2021.) My numbers now agree with your updated Google Sheet.
