It is not quite spring training yet (and there are a sprinkling of big leaguers down there too), but some interesting observations from Steve Potter on players in for early workouts or "performance" camps. Might as well create the thread now so we don't randomly put stuff like this in other threads.

Enrique Segura described as a "little Nola" here. Jaydenn Estanista making some progress too. And an actual Nola sighting on the back fields.

I guess they can't give you MLK Day "off" if you're not getting paid to begin with.

He mentions Alvarado was there as well as Nola.

Steve Potter has mentioned a 'feed' from the complex a few times. I guess that is a super-secret members-only video feed?

There's an article somewhere about how they're developing the complex for year around development, and want to use the video/analytics they do for ML players for all their prospects as well. Sounds like Middleton is making a serious investment in the farm system, not just the luxury tax.

Some notes from the end of high performance camp.

When did they start these off-season camps for minor leaguers?

To belabor my point above:

"The new hitting lab being constructed in the Montgomery Building will further help the analysts and coaches identify both strengths and weaknesses and work towards peak performance."

They proposed a major expansion in October:

The renovations would see the Phillies move all player-development staff and facilities to Clearwater, expanding facilities while perhaps adding a player dorm to the mix.

However, “There have been several iterations of these proposed concepts over the past couple of years in an ongoing effort to meet the needs of the organization in Florida, both now, and for many years to come,” Timberlake said. “To say that we have anything more than plans that are conceptual in nature would be an overstatement.”

Philadelphia Phillies buy property near spring training ballpark

Nov 18, 2022 — Phillies purchase 13-acre property near Clearwater ballpark for $22.5 million ... which came to be known as the Carpenter Complex, in 1967.

Here is a detailed post from Steve Potter on the minor league field staff and various coordinators:

At first glance it is an impressive list with what looks like double the staff compared to 5-10 years ago. It would be interesting to see how this lines up with what other teams around baseball are doing. One slight issue to me might be the lack of Latino field staff on 3 of the full season teams (Reading, Jersey Shore, Clearwater). There are plenty of Latino coaches in other roles (and I am guessing there are translators beyond the baseball staff), but I think it would be nice to have at least one Latino coach at each level.

Andrew Baker adding a cutter. Assume this is the "Alvarado plan" to add a second speed that is easier to throw for strikes than his curve or slider.

Hero Steve Potter has the Minor League Spring Roster. Gavin Tonkel lives.

More from Phuture Phillies here. Looks like 11 players are in the Dominican complex but slated to come here, likely after cuts are made (many will come from the non-roster players invited to Spring Training).

The minor league transactions for 3/15 show catching prospect Rickardo Perez' status changed from "Active" to "Suspended # days." No idea why.

Some minor league stats from Day 1 from Steve Potter

Here's a fun paragraph from the Low A Game:

CF Rickardo Rosario had a day going 3 for 4 with a walk, double, two home runs and four RBIs - he scored two runs out of the leadoff spot. SS Bryan Rincon went 2 for 3 with 2 walks and a double. 3B Felix Reyes was 3 for 4 with two runs scored. LF Gavin Tonkel went 2 for 2 with a walk and two RBIs. The Phillies stole no bases in the game but then again they didn’t have to as the club scored 13 runs.

Another day with some writeups -

Also, here's a good paragraph from the High A game -

Third baseman Freylin Mineyty had two hits, a stolen base, RBI and scored a run. DH Jordan Viars doubled and had an RBI. First baseman Dakota Kotowski and DH Micah Yonamine each had singles and two RBIs. Justin Crawford( CF), Emaarion Boyd( LF ), Andrik Nava ( C ), Chad Castillo ( 1B ) and Erick Brito ( SS ) each hit singles.

Wen Hui Pan sighting. I think he just got to camp last week. Hoping they can get him to Clearwater rather than FCL though guessing he is on more of a May timetable.

Mark Appel - class act.

Philly, thank you. For everything.

In 2015, you believed in me and traded for me, even as I struggled with performance and injuries.

In 2018, you graciously supported me as I dealt with my struggles off the field.

I'm bummed about that. I'm pretty certain that I'll find a bullpen pitcher at Lehigh Valley that I will find less qualified than Mark Appel.

You'll probably find one in Philadelphia too!

It's a little odd they re-signed him as a minor league free agent in the first place but maybe that does speak to how good the relationship was. Might also be a situation where it was less that the Phillies didn't have room for him under the organizational cap as, they both realized he was never going to get back up to MLB (as wound up also being the case last year ultimately). If he really wants one more kick at the can in what he's calling his last season he's probably better off somewhere else. Doubly so if he's still holding out any hope beyond that. Or he might just be ready to stop.

Of course it being the Phillies it's also easy to imagine they didn't want one of their minor leaguers blogging and tweeting his way through the season, especially with frank talk about minor league life and player rights. But, he said - on Twitter, naturally - that the release's timing was coincidental. He probably does want to find a new team if he can - better for the blog.

Day 3 Recap:

Homer for Viars. Bryan Rincon continues to hit.

Always appreciated Appel for his transparency and honesty, when he didn't have to be. He was able to take a break and come back and contribute to a team that made it to the World Series in his one and only year in the bigs. Not a bad thing to hang your hat on.

Only been four days but guys that seem to be getting mentioned on the hitting side are Ethan Wilson, Jordan Viars, Bryan Rincon, Felix Reyes

I noticed Reyes was at 3B in that report. He has only played 8 innings there than in the past. He is a relatively athletic but big kid at 6'4" and listed at 195 (probably 200+ easily these days). He has always stood out physically but has not hit that well (639 career OPS). He signed late and made his debut at FCL rather than in the DSL at age 20, so he is both at the age (22 this year) when he needs to produce while also not having any time at the easier complex level.

Friday 3/24 Update - Only 2 games but some big days for Vairs, Boyd, Abel, McFarlane

Saturday 3/25 - Lost all the games but Ethan Wilson keeps hitting.

Teams are starting to look a little more like final rosters as cuts are now filtering down.

Good to see Carlos De La Cruz getting the spring training award. Clearly a sign the team likes him.

Jim Peyton is posting LHV and Reading Rosters over on twitter for those interested

In some of the OF questions it looks like Johan Rojas and Jhailyn Ortiz will be at Lehigh Valley and Carlos De La Cruz will be at Reading. I suppose Rojas could still be pushed down by late additions, but his inclusion in AAA immediately would be a mild and pleasant surprise. Team might be hedging their bets on needing a right-handed CF complement to Marsh at some point. Let Marsh have April to prove he can handle left-handed pitching adequately and move to plan B in May if not.

I may not have seen every game stat, but Mick Abel certainly pitched well enough in Spring training from what I saw to deserve to start at AA.

Since Abel finished at AA he was probably going to start there again if he did not make AAA. Seeing the Phillies add a couple of AAA starters (Allgeyer, Zeuch) in recent days means they don't want to push him.

Ideal plan for Abel might be 10 starts in AA followed by 10 starts in AAA to see where he is after the All Star break. He needs a little more polish than Painter but he is also not far behind. McGarry is also not on that roster, so I am guessing they want to see a little more sustained success from him too.

Phillies walk it off in the 9th to finish spring training above .500 at 16-15.

Darick Hall with a "I can play every day" attempt by hitting a game winning double, going 2-3 with 2 RBI. He is sitting at 1.041 OPS so far this spring. I am not sure i think he can play every day, but it is nice to see him (and a few others) trying to sell us on the idea. Not everyone is hitting, but at least there are no significant players under .500 OPS (agreed a low threshold, but it is a small sample size).

Well, I guess we can lock the major league spring training thread now.

Always nice to have a winning spring record.

I’m looking forward to games that count. This is my 72nd season of following and rooting for the Phillies. The first game I saw in person was a couple years before I really became a fan. As always, I am optimistic for the new season.
